Elements 13 very slow - caught on generating thumbnails?

Installed trial of elements 13 on Win 8.1, i7, 64 bit, 4GB RAM, SSD (with around 20Gb free).

Imported around 8000 photos & videos to new catalog - files are stored on a synology NAS.

Files imported fine and ran through the thumbnail generation apparently fine, but immediately after this application has become very slow e.g. scrolling the organiser very difficult, almost all operations cause 'not responding' in windows task manager every few seconds, rollovers on buttons take a few seconds to appear, etc. Everything still appears to work, but it's unusable.

I wondered if it's got caught on thumbnail generation. Each time the application restarts the generating thumbnails spinner appears in bottom left with a tooltip saying it's generating for 148 files (i don't know which) - but this spinner disappears after a few seconds and then the count restarts every time application restarted.

Have already tried:
- turning off any auto-analysis, face etc
- deleting preferences file
- optimising & repairing the catelog
- rebooting machine
- turning off thumbnail generation for videos

Any ideas?

Should add that the CPU is down on 0-1% usage, disk is 0% and there's 25% free memory while this problem occurs - so it doesn't appear as if elements is maxing anything out. If I try to scroll the organiser it goes up to something like 4% CPU, then after a few seconds jerky scrolls down.

That sounds like an OS call is hanging while waiting on a resource (disk, network server, etc.).

I recall some problems a few months back with synology NAS systems -- I think they required an update to fix the server side bug.

If so, is there anything that can be done about it? I tried a NAS reboot and killing any processes that looked elements-related on the PC - but hasn't changed the issue.

Also forgot to mention that sometimes elements doesn't get an icon on the windows taskbar - it can be running and open but with no indication on the taskbar - don't know if this is related.

The previous synology issues needed a server software update to fix them.

Did you Defrag the thumbnailDB cache file?
