Photoshop: Dragging layer between documents with smart objects sometimes SLOW?

hi,

i am experiencing strange behaviour when dragging layers or smart objects between documents with smart objects.

sometimes the layer/object appears instantly in the new document.

but most of the time it takes a lot of time? it seems that it calculates all smart objects again. how can i avoid that? because i know that sometimes it works instantly, with the same documents.

as example: i was just dragging curves adjustment layer from one document containing smart objects to another opened document with smart objects. it was just one adjustment layer, and i was dragging it on top of the layers, to avoid interfering with others. it took up to 5 min to calculate this.

yesterday i had the same two opened files, i was dragging few layers with adjustment layers and they appeared instantly?

please help!

im working on mac pro 2013, 32gb ram OSX 10.9

Smart Objects are full files that have to be read in and rasterized - that can be slow depending on the document, the computer, how many copies it has to render, etc.

thanks!

i know this.
but my question was more, why sometimes it takes so much time and sometimes not?

my example was just with one layer dragged on top of the layers in other opened document. can you please clarify what exactly should be re-calculated in this case?

because dragging other layers to the same file happens sometimes instantly too. so there is a situation where nothing should be re-calculated.

also i'm aware that dragging smart object between files needs time, so they can be re-calculated.

but here i'm talking about normal pixel layers or adjustment layers.

i will try to simply recreate the situation and send an example.

Without knowing the full structure of your document, and details of your computer - we can't know.

It could be anything from layer comps slowdowns, or updating a lot of smart objects, to a video driver bug slowing down redraw.
