Adobe CS 6 will not open the photo library on my iMac. It "does not  recognize this type of file".  Why?

Photoshop can open JPEG and raw images stored in a library, but it cannot open a proprietary library file (it's a database, not an image file)

It would be amazing if Photoshop or Lightroom could view the iPhotos library in the same way that Apple Photos does.

You can right click "iPhoto Library" and choose "Show Package Contents" to open the iPhoto Library.  From there, you'll probably want to go into the "Masters" folder; however, you'll probably find it easier to export the files that you want to work with in Photoshop from Apple Photos (https://support.apple.com/guide/photos/export-photos-videos-and-slideshows-pht6e157c5f/mac).
