Photoshop CS6 Keyboard Shortcuts Malfunctioning - Tool size change reverts to previous tool

When I try to switch between tools (primarily clone stamp, spot healing, dodge/burn, brush) and immediately change the size of the brush using the bracket keys [ ] instead of changing the tool size, it reverts back to whichever tool I was previously using and starts changing the size of that one.

I have tried remapping the keyboard shortcuts, restarting the computer, resetting the custom shortcuts to the default settings, and nothing is working.

The only things we've seen cause similar problems on Windows are external applications and some tablet drivers (updated drivers usually fix it).
Chrome had a bug a few versions back where it would mess up keyboard input for Photoshop (again, update fixed it).

Also, are you holding down the new tool keyboard shortcut for a long time? If so, you would hit the spring loaded tools case -- where it is expected to switch back to the previous tool when you let up on that key.

Hello Alicia,

I have to agree with Chris; typical problems like this turn out to be problems with other components.  That said, if the problem is continuing, we're happy to do what we can.  What kind of mouse, keyboard, and/or tablet are you using?  Have you checked for updated drivers for all of these?  Do any have companion applications, particularly those which capture keyboard input?  Any other applications that capture commands, even when you're running a different app?

If you'd like, we can also do a web-hosted screenshare to try and troubleshoot this for you.  Just ping me here and I can set something up.

Thanks,
David

Chris & David,

I am not holding down the keys too long or doing anything out of the ordinary with my switching. I am able to use the Photoshop shortcuts fine on two other computers. The tools only revert back when I use the bracket keys [ ] to change size or sometimes when I change the opacity using the number keys.

My keyboard is a HP USB Multimedia Keyboard and the mouse is a HP USB Optical Mouse. The tablet is a Huion something, but we were having problems before the tablet was installed. The drivers were updated when we installed the tablet. I just checked and they are still up to date, and an update to Photoshop did not resolve the issue either.

I am in the office Mondays & Wednesdays if you would like to poke around the computer for yourself.

Thanks,

Alicia

Hi Alicia,

It sounds like something is interfering with your machine's ability to pass Photoshop keyboard input.  If you have no problem on two other computers running the same version of Photoshop, that's pretty much confirmation that the machine which IS having a problem has some application or hardware unique to it causing the problem.  As I mentioned, we hear this quite frequently, actually.

If this were me, I would eliminate one element at a time, starting with the most exotic.  So physical tablet, then all the tablet's software (I'd bet the issue's here), then try using a different keyboard and mouse, and so on.  I'm assuming you're running an English keyboard, both physically and logically, right?  If all the above fails, try looking at helper apps that do screen-captures, video start/stop, or otherwise remain active with a different application has focus.

I can help poke around your system, but it would be better if you did the major checking first as my time is limited.

Thanks,
David

I uninstalled all of the tablet software and so far the problem seems to have been resolved, which is very odd because the hotkey issue was happening before I installed the tablet. I had hoped the tablet would actually help me get around using certain keys as much so it wouldn't be such an annoyance.

But now I have the problem that I potentially cannot use the tablet to edit! Do you have any suggestions for this? I'm using a Huion H610Pro. Are there specific drivers or settings that need to be in place for it to function properly with Photoshop?

Thanks for your time,

Alicia

Check with the tablet maker for updated drivers. If you continue to have problems with their tablet driver installed, contact the tablet maker so they can get more information to fix the bug in their driver software.

Howdy Alicia,

First, thank you so much for sharing this with us.  It will help us troubleshoot other users with similar problems.

As Chris mentioned, you probably need to reach out to the tablet manufacturer so they can resolve whatever bug is triggering this problem.  I'm sorry there's not a more immediate resolution available.

If you hear anything more, please feel free to share it!

Thanks,
David

Hi again,

Apparently it wasn't the tablet. I messed around with a couple photos test editing and everything seemed fine initially, but once I started to actually edit I realized the tools are still switching when I use the brackets or number keys to change size or opacity. Any additional ideas?

Hope to hear from you soon,

Alicia

Howdy Alicia,

Sorry that you're still having troubles.  If you're available today, we can do a web-hosted screenshare to get to the bottom of this.  I find it helpful and usually am able to resolve the problem.  All you need is a phone line (so we can talk) and an Internet connection.  I'm in California, so Pacific time.

Also, do you have another keyboard you could try?  It almost sounds like the bracket keys are triggering behavior similar to spring-loaded tools.  That makes me suspect the keyboard and yours is non-standard.

Thanks,
David
