Since Adobe hasn't answered — What were those conditions? I'm trying to reproduce it here, Mac running El Cap, and I even tried complex glyphs and a script word I kerned. Other than the usual Adobe fault of generating far too many anchors to be useful if I'm planning to edit, I can't find anything wrong with using the command. I'm not crashing. I've used both Open Type and True Type fonts.

Is there a particular font/glyph combo that reproduces the issue? Exact STR would be extremely helpful.
