The "new guide layout" tool is really cool. It lets you create guides based on column / row / margin / gutter values, instead of doing it manually. But one downside is that it won't let you set a width or a height for your layout.

For example: I am creating a newsletter with a total width of 600px, plus 100px for HTML background. To use the tool I need to set the canvas to 600px, add the guides (3 col, 40px margin, 20px gutter) and then change the canvas to 700px to work with the extra space.

In other words, it would be nice if we could have more values to play with, and more info about our guide-based layout, as column sizes, fractional values, total grid size matching with the specified width etc etc. The best reference I've found (and I've been using it for a very long time) is this site: http://gridcalculator.dk/.

Please Adobe, take Grid Calculator as a reference for improving the guide creating tool on future updates.
