Photoshop CC OpenCL option greyed out - still unresolved ...

I have been advised to repost my original query here as those who follow may be able to help.

 My basic query is:

I am unable to use features in Photoshop CC 2017 that require OpenCL to be available.  The option to use this is greyed out (Edit | Preferences).

I am able to select Filter | Stylize | Oil Paint, but always get a message that my drivers need updating (they don’t).  If I ‘continue’, none of the available functionality displayed has any effect on my image.

I am advised by NVidia that my GU (GeForce GT705) is compatible with OpenCL 1.1.  I have the latest driver installed.

My query is - assuming my card is OK, why is this option unavailable to me in Photoshop?

Other users seem to have the same issue, but I have yet to see a reply that resolves this problem.

This may not be what you want to hear. The GeForce GT 705  is a very low-end GPU. Even if you could get it to work the Oil Paint Filter slider response is going to be very slow. With my slightly higher performance Quadro 600 GPU it takes  8-10 sec. to update the screen preview and 3-4 sec. to update the palette  preview when making adjustments.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=91&cmp%5B%5D=2952

Best suggestion I can offer is to upgrade the graphics card if it's a desktop system.

Hi Todd

Thanks for your reply.  I can accept that my GPU is not the most powerful in the world – but it is listed on Adobe’s web site as being compatible with Photoshop.  Hence my query – if so, why doesn’t it work?

As others seem to be having similar issues with their GPUs, how can I be sure that any replacement I buy will actually work?

The main reason I purchased my desktop PC was to replace a laptop that was having graphics card issues with sniffer.exe running multiple copies in the background after loading Photoshop!

Regards

The GeForce GT 705 is an OEM product meaning Nvidia built it specifically for use by system manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo). Not a big deal except the manufacturer also creates their own "version" of the graphics driver that they know "works." That probably means they are adding modifications to the driver, which might affect compatibility with applications like PS.

First make sure all Windows and manufacture (i.e. Dell, HP) driver updates have been installed. Then download and install the GT 705 driver direct from Nvidia. This is they same revision version (382.33) of the OEM driver you have installed (OEM Driver 22.21.13.8233):

Windows 7 & 8
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/119397/en-us

Windows 10 (added after posting)
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/119399/en-us

When installing the new driver check the 'Clean Install' option as outlined below:

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2900/~/installing-nvidia-display-drivers-under-wi...

If during the new driver installation it says the driver is up to date or incompatible you may need to uninstall the current driver, reboot the system, and then install the new driver. BTW what system model are you using?

Just found this note from Adobe Staff indicating the GPU needs to support OpenCL 1.1 AND meet a minimum speed capability (TBD):

 https://forums.adobe.com/message/8285734#8285734

Currently, our leading theory is that the speed at which OpenCL can run on your card is too slow. This speed is designated by the line:

clgpu[0].CLCompute=112.156

We are still investigating what the minimum for this should be and whether we can program Photoshop to get around this. Of course, if we program around this, functions like Oil Paint will work, but they will be very slow.

Your GT 705 GPU (open CL not Working)
clgpu[0].CLCompute=47.9589

My Quadro 600 (OpenCL works)

clgpu[0].CLCompute=70.4678

So it looks like they changed the minimum to allow a CLCompute= 70.4678 to work, but perhaps not your 47.9589 value.

I'd still give the graphics driver update a try and make sure PS is up to date (2017.1.1).

I have re-downloaded the latest driver from nvidia.   I did have this driver version installed previously, but followed your recommendation and completed a clean install.  No change in behaviour, I’m afraid.

I do see, though, that my CLCompute value has now gone DOWN!

clgpu[0].CLCompute=47.9565

Just checked it again and it is now:

clgpu[0].CLCompute=47.9582

Seems to change a little each time I check.

PC is a Dell Inspiron 3847 running Windows 10.  Photoshop is 2017.1.1 (20170425.r.252 x64).

I'm afraid your only option is to upgrade the GPU, but you are power supply limited. You'll need to select a GPU that requires no more than about 60 Watts.

Interestingly I tried using the Oil Painting filter again and got the below error message. After closing and reopening PS it works with no issues. The only thing different would be less available memory due to working inside LR. How much system memory do you have installed?

16Gb.

That's the message I see each time, no matter what is running on my PC or how many times I load Photoshop.

I guess the answer was always going to be 'upgrade your GPU'.

I accept there are much greater things in the world to get wound up about - but it does annoy me that the Adobe website says my GPU is tested / compatible with Photoshop when it obviously isn't!

It would be good to see a detailed requirements spec from Adobe (as opposed to a high-level list) in order that adequate GPUs can be installed - or frustrated users can check and determine whether their equipment is up to the mark.

System requirements specifications almost always list a "minimum" that should be usable. This includes both OS and app system requirements. As we all know systems built with these minimum specs rarely run well. Here's an example:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html

Unfortunately when talking about something like PS or LR GPU requirements it's going to get complicated. There's no easy way to determine if GPU A will run better than GPU B without extensive testing. In the case of Lightroom very high-end GPUs for unknown reasons run no better (or worse) than lower-end GPUs. Updates to OS, drivers, and apps can affect both performance and compatibility so it's a "moving target" as to what works well, what works poorly, and what simply doesn't work.

Best advice is to use current technology components that have significantly better specifications than the minimums listed. The low-end GT 705 does work with PS except for OpenCL performance. I hesitate to make a recommendation, but the GTX 750 Ti (60 W.) looks like a good choice for your power supply limited system. Good luck!

We've seen instances where updating windows 10 deletes the OpenCL.dll out of the system32 directory.

If you uninstall the nVidia driver and reinstall it, it should replace the deleted OpenCL.dll

Jeffrey - I do have the latest version of OpenCL.dll in the system32 directory - but thanks for the suggestion.

Todd - again comments accepted and thanks for the recommendation - but on the page that your first link link goes to it clearly lists cards that will or won't work.  My PC and card meet the requirements given (as I read it).  Indeed my card is listed as 'tested' (700 series).  So, complicated or not - the requirements statements given need to be either clearer or more accurate.

I believe it is reasonable to assume that the features listed on that page should work with the equipment I have.  I suggest it needs reviewing - if you look at the large number of similar issues to the one I have, there are quite a few users in the same boat.

Hi Keith,

Your bandwidth score is the culprit: clgpu[0].CLBandwidth=1.09377e+10

What memory configuration does your machine have? It reports 16GB. Is that one one DIMM or two?

Chuck.

Jeff, his PS system info is showing that OpenCL is detected, but with low CLBandwidth and CLCompute values (see below). Apparently anything below a specified minimum value causes OpenCL support to be disabled. So there are two criteria, 1) OpenCL v1.1 or later support detected and 2) OpenCL Sniffer test values = Minimum Value or higher.

Not sure how these minimum values are determined. The Oil Painting filter works on my system using a low-end Quadro 600 GPU, but with slow preview rendering (~8 sec.). Nonetheless it should be usable on an even slower system.

Hi Keith,

In that case, adding a DIMM will not help, unfortunately, as you're already making use of dual channel memory. Our OpenCL features have a stricter set of requirements than the OpenGL based ones. This is because we use OpenCL for the more demanding computations, which would not perform well with cards that either have a low bandwidth or compute score. Your card is slightly below our cutoff of 1.2e+10.

We do relax that requirement for one OpenCL based feature, which we try to use even when OpenCL is grayed out: Oil Paint. That you are getting a crash there leads me to suspect a deeper OpenCL problem is going on with your card, such as a compilation failure on the Oil Paint shader code, something we see in drivers from time to time.

Getting to the bottom of what's going on there is going to take some time though and isn't going to be of any help to you in the short term. I'm sorry about that.

Sincerely,
Chuck.

Thanks Chuck - and to everyone who has commented / helped.  Much appreciated.

Accepting all the complexities, I guess my closing view is one of disappointment that something that the Adobe website says will work actually doesn't.  Maybe a rethink of the way things are advertised might be considered?

After all, software developers are paid to develop software to a specification and release it when it works.  Accepting that software bugs occur, this issue has been known for some time based on posts on various forums (Adobe and beyond).

Keith, as Chuck mentioned there may be an issue with your specific GPU or system. This could be a defective hardware component, driver difference, or OS issue.

My older generation 2.8 GHz i7-860 quad-core system (yours 3.6 GHz i7-4790) with 12 GB dual-channel DDR2 memory (yours 16GB dual-channel DDR3 ) works with a similar low-end GPU.

It might be helpful to run the PassMark Performance Benchmark Test, which is free to use for 30 days. Place a screenshot of your results as below in a reply for comparison. Thank you!

All your numbers are higher than mine except for Disk Mark and 3D Mark. The Disk Mark is lower because you have an HDD, which shouldn't matter. The 472 3D Mark test value is slightly higher than the 410 value on Passmark's website for all submitted tests. It appears your system is performing  well and as expected.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+705&id=2952

I did further investigation and discovered it is possible a Windows 10 upgrade corrupted your system opencl.dl files. Jeff Tranberry mentioned this, but in some cases reinstalling the graphics drivers apparently doesn't fix the issue. The suggestions offered at the below link seemed to work for some users (see comments).

I have run an SFC scan and no problems reported.  I have searched the results log for errors relating to opencl.dll - no mention.

I have also run a DISM scan - again all OK and no opencl.dll errors reported.

Interestingly (?), I have been having the same problem on my laptop (i.e. no OilPaint).  However, after a recent update, I noticed that, for the first time on that machine, the 'Use OpenCL" check box was not greyed out.  I checked it, but no difference in functionality.

However, after the latest (large) Windows 10 update, OilPaint now works on the laptop!!

I have copied the opencl.dll file from my laptop to my desktop - but it only makes matters worse ... greying out the OilPaint option under the Filter | Stylize menu.

I'm going to uninstall my GPU driver (again), reboot and reinstall to see if that makes any difference after the latest W10 update.

Since the SFC did not report any problems and your PassMark scores look good then opencl.dll is OK. Something in the PS OpenCL compatibility check is causing the issue.

Manually copying and over-writing the existing  opencl.dll file is what causes the file corruption as explained in that article. I suggest re-running the SFC scan and see what it reports now.

Can I ask ... when I copied over the opencl.dll from my laptop, I first copied the PC's original, hence renaming it.  I then put the laptop version in.  As it was no improvement, I then deleted the copied over file and renamed the PC version copy back to its original name.

I have rerun the SFC scan - nor opencl.dll errors there.

Would it help if I put the laptop version back and tried again?

Copying over and/or renaming opencl.dll files may cause a Windows system hash check error. If the last rerun of SFC didn't find opencl.dll mismatch errors then you are OK. Do a Windows Update check on the desktop and install any new updates. If the latest update fixed the laptop it may do the same for your desktop.

Further info in case it helps ... have entered SafeMode and uninstalled all Nvidia drivers.  Then reinstalled.  No change.

One thing I have just noticed and mention it in case it helps identify where the problem is ... in Photoshop | Edit | Preferences | Advanced GP Settings, if I change the Drawing Mode to Basic, I DO NOT get an error saying my drivers need updating when selecting OilPaint.  On Normal and Advanced modes, I do.  No ultimate change in functionality - i.e. OilPaint does not work in any mode.

Re opencl.dll - I have tried various offerings - even renaming opencl64.dl_ to opencl.dll and trying that.  Nothing improves matters.

Re Windows Update - already tried, I'm afraid.  All up to date - Windows 10 Version 1607.

The fact that the original SFC scan did not find any file errors indicates the problem is most likely due to the PS OpenCl performance check. Please see my other post concerning NOT "manually" replacing the opencl.dll files. Nothing more I can think of to try. At least your laptop is working with the Oil Paint filter.

BTW what GPUs do you have in the laptop and what is showing in PS System Info for:

clgpu[0].CLName=
clgpu[0].CLDriverVersion=
clgpu[0].CLBandwidth=
clgpu[0].CLCompute=
