Photoshop CC: How do I create multiple shapes on the same layer?

I am trying to follow through this video by PixelVert to create a 3D gear using Photoshop. However, Pixelvert is using CS6 while I am on CC 2014.2.

3D Gear Video I am trying to follow:

Towards time 2:25 in the video, he creates several small ellipses by duplicating them, but they all remain in the same layer. When I try the same, they are all landing up on individual layers. As a result subsequent steps to Merge Shapes etc are going wrong and I don't end up with a gear .. mine looks more like a flower or something.

How do I make PS behave the way CS6 is behaving in the video? Or what should I be doing differently in CC ?

If you already have lots of layers, select all your individual shape layers and hit Cmd+E or Ctrl+E, they'll all merge into a single shape layer without rasterising. Then you can select individual shapes with the Direct Selection Tool (A).

If you only have one layer and one shape, make sure your shape is selected: with the Direct Selection tool (A), click on it, a 1px grey line should appear around the shape. Then use your shape tool (U), it should create more shapes within the same layer.
