Photoshop CC 2015.1.2: Crash on Macintosh

I am working on some largish photos, and I have had Photoshop CC crash about 10 times in the last two days. The symptoms are similar each time.

After editing a document, I Save or Save As (as TIFFs). When the document is about 98% saved, Photoshop crashes.

I then relaunch Photoshop and often two, seemingly identical, recovery windows are shown. Yesterday, when I tried to save the recovery documents as TIFFs, Photoshop crashed again, and I lost the recovery document. Today I tried saving the recovery document as a psb file (not tiff), and the save completed successfully.

The interesting thing is that every time I have this happen, the Macintosh window manager seems totally bunged up after I relaunch Photoshop. Symptoms include:
  • The Window menu shows multiple windows, but I can only see one.
  • When two windows are visible on-screen, selecting the back window in the Window menu activates that window, but does not bring it to the front
  • Switching to another application and then switching back to Photoshop shows both windows inactive (controls gray, not colored)
  • About Photoshop does not bring up a window. All the menus gray out and the front window becomes inactive, but an "About Photoshop" window fails to display.
As I say, these bugs are seen after Photoshop has crashed, and I have relaunched it.

I have to reboot in order to get these peculiarities to go away (until the next time Photoshop crashes, of course).

Some items that might be relevant.
  • I am using the latest version of El Capitan (10.11.5)
  • I am using the latest version of Photoshop CC (2015.1.2)
  • I have two screens, and I am running my iMac 5K at 3200 x 1800 pixels
  • The images are large, and sometimes I get the "4 gig" warning if I save them as uncompressed TIFFs.
  • I am launching Photoshop from the Edit command in Lightroom (editing a raw file to make a TIFF)
  • I have long actions in Photoshop that I am running.
  • I have 32 GB of RAM, and I haven't noticed that I am running out of memory. (I keep Activity Monitor open, but I don't consult it that often, and it is behind my other windows).
I am attaching the following
  • what the screen looks like when I switch from another program to Photoshop (using cmd-tab). Note that neither window is active.
  • what the screen looks like after I choose the lower window from the Windows menu (the window order doesn't change, but the lower window becomes active)

  • I have the saved crash report, but I can't figure out how to upload it here.
Any advice is welcome. I think perhaps I'll go back to Photoshop 6 for a while. Rebooting and restarting this project is a big waste of time for me.

There's a more recent version of Photoshop (CC 2015.5). Try installing that version but keep 2015.1.2 installed falling these instructions:

Let me know if you still get crashes, please submit all Crash Reports along with your email address:

Thanks, Jeffrey. I'll try that.
