How many layers in the document? Is there a layer above the one you're working on that is blocking view of the changes?

If you try on a flat document with only a background layer does it work?

I have the same issue today, I am using photoshop cc 2018, with the latest update. Content aware simply does not work. I only have one layer, and it is rasterized. Any suggestions?

Update: Just realized that content aware does NOT work with a PNG file, it must be a JPG file. Hope this helps others.

I think RGB png files are supported. I suspect you had an Indexed Color PNG, which would not be supported

This is true.  And no it doesn't need to just be JPG - it definitely works on PSD, TIFF, etc.
