Photoshop CC 2019: Project screen freezing on previous project.

I'm having problems with my photoshop screen freezing. I can still click through the different project tabs within the window, but the screen will be frozen on last project open. I then have to force quit and reopen everything. I have the latest update and still have issues.

Howdy Molly,

What exactly are you trying to do?  We can try to help talk you through what you're seeing, but we'll need step-by-steps of what happened.

Thanks,
David

I'll open photoshop and have many tabs open. All will usually start well where I can navigate between my projects fine and bounce between the tabs to each art work. However lately, if I leave my photoshop idle or minimized and try to come back to the program with those tabs open it will freeze on the last opened project. I can continue to edit and work on that specific tab. But if I go to any other tab it will select the tab like normal but the viewing box will be frozen to the previous project. I then have to force quit and restart to be able to get to those other projects again.

Hopefully that helps clarify.

Howdy Molly,

That actually does help a LOT.

First, are you on Mac or Windows?  Which version of the OS?  Which version of Photoshop?

Next, what OTHER apps do you have open when this is happening?  Does it happen every time?  What are your system resources like?  What size files are you working with?  How much scratch disk space do you have?

Let's start with these answers and go from there...

Thanks,
David

I'm on a Mac - OS Catina 10.15.1. And Photoshop 21.0.1

I am unsure of how all the apps. But a few that I can be pretty confident are open when this happens is Chrome, Outlook, and maybe Illustrator or Indesign.

My file sizes range when this has happened. Some larger and some not so large. Ranging from 3M - 9M.

It doesn't happen every time. It's maybe an average of 1-2 times a day.

I have 800+ GB Scratch Disk storage available.

Not sure how to answer "What are your system resources like?"

Howdy Molly,

No worries.  This is a good start.  If you go to Help > System Info.  Post the first few lines, like this:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.6 20190724.r.80 2019/07/24: 1207344  x64
Number of Launches: 26
Operating System: Mac OS 10.15.1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:6, Stepping:1 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, HyperThreading
Physical processor count: 4
Logical processor count: 8
Processor speed: 2500 MHz
Built-in memory: 16384 MB
Free memory: 8716 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 13027 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 70 %

Are you using a tablet as well?  How many other files are open?  Do other apps crash?  When PS becomes unstable, have you ever checked Activity Monitor to see what's going on?  Any side-car apps or third-party plugins?  What KIND of work are you doing in PS when things become unstable?

Thanks,
David

I am not using a tablet and it has happened with 3-5 tabs open. Other apps do not crash. I am not aware of the activity monitor so I have not checked that. I do not believe I have any side-car apps or third-party plugins. I am a graphic designer so doing two dimensional work. Working with graphics, illustrations, and images. Nothing over the top lately to make the files so large or the processing slow.

I will mention that when I downloaded this last photoshop update it did a strange thing by keeping the older version and the new one. Since the older app has disappeared. But maybe something went wonky with the initial install of this newer update?

Howdy Molly,

For the last couple of years now, we've been installing major releases in parallel without removing the previous version.  It shouldn't have disappeared after the install was complete -- there is a switch to remove it, but it would take effect when you installed.  Does someone else share your machine with you?  Also, what about third-party plugins for Photoshop like Topaz or Liquid Sky?  Have you tried increasing your number of Caches?

Thanks,
David

No one else shares this computer and I don't have any of the those third party plugins. I haven't tried the cache yet. I'll do that now. My Illustrator also did this yesterday. I did minimize the screen when it was in it's glitch and it snapped out of the frozen screen and brought up the right view.

Molly, when you get in this state, are you getting a rainbow wheel? If you resize the whole Photoshop frame slightly, does it update?

Hey Jeffery! I don't get a rainbow wheel. I can still toggle between the different tabs I have open just fine. The window just freezes on the previous project open and won't change. I actually hadn't tried to adjust the frame! Next time I'll be sure to try that and see what it does.

Hey Jeffery!

I just had the problem happen again and minimizing the screen helped it snap out of the glitch!
