Photoshop CC 2018: Plugin Panels won't recognize Stylus correctly after Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Hello there, after some extensive testing I was able to verify on two machines, that the Windows 10 Falls Creators Update breaks "something", probably Windows Freehand.

I own several color Picker Plugins: Magic Picker, Coolorus and Prisma Palette (most recent versions). All of them suffer from the same issue.

Problem:
When updating to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the Plugins mentioned above won't recognize the stylus when pressing and moving across the Color Picker areas. Only "clicking" with the pen tip without trying to move the color selector around changes the color.

Testing Process:
Tested on two machines. Both with Photoshop CC2017 and the new CC 2018.

1. Wacom Cintiq Companion 2
Windows 10 pre Fall Creators Update (most recent Version)
All drivers Updated
Different Wacom Drivers tested (6.3.23-1 / 6.3.24-2/ 6.3.24-5a and newest Wacom
Driver)
All Plugins Updated
All Programms Updated
The Adobe Color Themes Panel works fine.
The Adobe Color Panel works fine.

-> Plugin Panels work as intended. No problems whatsoever.

1.1 Wacom Cintiq Companion 2
Update installation of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update V.1709 (Build 16299.19)
All drivers Updated
Different Wacom Drivers tested (6.3.23-1 / 6.3.24-2/ 6.3.24-5a and newest Wacom
Driver)
All Plugins Updated
All Programms Updated
The Adobe Color Themes Panel works fine.
The Adobe Color Panel works fine.

-> Plugin Panels are broken.

2. Work Machine:
Windows 10 pre Fall Creators Update V.1709 (Build 16299.19)
All drivers Updated
Different Wacom Drivers tested (6.3.23-1 / 6.3.24-2/ 6.3.24-5a and newest Wacom
Driver)
All Plugins Updated
All Programms Updated
Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch
The Adobe Color Themes Panel works fine.
The Adobe Color Panel works fine.

-> All Panels work as intended

2.1 Work Machine:
Fresh installation of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update V.1709 (Build 16299.19)
All drivers Updated
Different Wacom Drivers tested (6.3.23-1 / 6.3.24-2/ 6.3.24-5a and newest Wacom
Driver)
All Plugins Updated
All Programms Updated
Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch
The Adobe Color Themes Panel works fine.
The Adobe Color Panel works fine.

-> Plugin Panels are broken.

Other Observations:
  • When deactivating Windows Freehand, Panels show normal behavior, but other Pen functions like pressure sensitivity won't work anymore.
  • When clicking into the panels it seems, that Photoshop looses "focus" and only the plugin panels is recognizes as open window. As far as I understand it, this is because the plugins are small chromium windows within Photoshop (?).
  • When leaving the Plugin Windows i have to click into Photoshop again, so it is recognized as open and selected window.
Workaround:
Binding the left mouse button somewhere and pressing it while hovering across the windows makes color selection on the fly possible.

Conclusion:
My assumption is, that Microsoft changed something within Windows Freehand.
I can't tell where the error is located as there are many possible sources for the problematic behavior.

  • The Plugins themselves might have to be updated.
  • Photoshop might have to be updated.
  • Wacom Drivers might have to be Updated
I have contacted Wacom and the Plugin makers aswell regarding the issue.

Anastasiy from MagicPicker is currently looking into it, but said, that I was the first one to report this.I'm currently awaiting answers from the other partys.

If need be, I can provide video of the problem.
Anyone else facing this issue, or has an idea for a solution

Best

I have the same problem too, exactly as described above. I'm also an artist who used the magic colourpicker for several years now and after the update to fall creators it started to get buggy. I also updated photoshop to the 2018 edition and I installed the newest driver from Wacom for my Cintiq 27QHD(without touch). So maybe one of the last 2 is causing it, I don't know. Desperate!

Hi Mastey,

May I ask you to try something? It was suggested in another thread and though the problem doesn't sound identical to yours, I'm wondering if this might help you:

Create a file named  "PSUserConfig.txt" and this file add the line "UseSystemStylus 0" (without the quotes). Then copy this file to
C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Settings.

Let me know if that helps you.

Regards,
Hannah Nicollet

Hi Hannah, I tried out your solution. Doesn't work. Photoshop doesn't open anymore afterwards.
Thanks though.

I was trying to fix another problem and ended up fixing this one as well.
After doing what the guy says in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3MlhIaK-y0
(I was trying to fix the initial delay that you get when doing a stroke because of Windows Ink)
The whole, "disable Windows Ink in the Wacom driver and paste the .txt inside that Photoshop folder" did the trick apparently. I guess Windows Ink was the problem there as well.
Try it out, see if it helps.
