Photoshop CC 2018: An integer between 96 and 8 is required. Closest value inserted. "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)"

Photoshop has become suddenly unusable. Almost every tool gives me an "Out of memory (RAM)" error and when I try to open the Performace pane I get the error in the title. I cannot get inside the settings, as this error keeps on popping up. I tried everything (reinstalling PS, deleting everything (including preferences), updating PS, updating Windows 10, switching to the latest Insider Preview). Nothing fixes this error.

Howdy Nicola,

How much hard drive space do you have, both on your main partition and your scratch drive.  It could easily be that you're simply out of space on one or both drives.

Thanks,
David

Hi David!

I double checked to be sure, but I have 120GB free on my main SSD (on which I installed both Windows 10 and PS) and 160GB free on my secondary drive, which leads me to believe that the issue isn't there.

Howdy Nicola,

No, you're right, that's plenty of space on your hard drives!  What about your RAM?  How much do you have?  What else is running?

Have you tried downloading a new installer from Creative Cloud?

Thanks,
David

Hey David,

I have 4.5GB on this laptop I'm trying to work with (which should be good enough). There are no other programs running while trying to use Photoshop.

Yes, I already tried reinstalling Photoshop both via the Creative Cloud app and via the offline installer.

Hi Nicola,

This is a known issue and it's in progress, but there is a workaround:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/invalid-numeric-entry-integer-96-8-required-photoshop.html

Let me know if that helps - thanks!

Hi Hannah Nicollet

When changing the value data from 0" to "24000" should we be mindful of how much memory we have? If my total memory is 32Gb does the amount of value data (2400) differ in the edit DWord?

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/invalid-numeric-entry-integer-96-8-required-photoshop.html

I'm not having problems with my PS CC but was wondering why there was such a variation of available RAM between this version of my Photoshop 19.1.3 compared to the previous version 18.1.2.

My question here:

Rosa, yes! Good catch! That documentation needs to be fixed. I just put in a request. In the meanwhile here's what it should say:
• Change the base value from "hexadecimal" to "decimal"
• Go to Windows > Settings > System > About and find Installed RAM
• Change the value data from "0" to installed RAM * 1000. For example:

  1. If installed RAM is 16GB, change value to 16000
  2. If installed RAM is 24GB, change value to 24000
  3. If installed RAM is 32GB, change value to 32000
So in your case yes, the value data would be 32000. Regarding your second question I'll do some checking and get back with you.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Rosa,

Apparently this calculation error is impacting a lot of areas, so it's likely that the calculation for available RAM was also impacted.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

Thanks so much for your quick response to my question.

This hasn't impacted the performance of my PS so far, which I'm grateful for.

Do you advise that I should just leave things as they are for the time being until an official fix and not use the workaround just in case I stuff things up?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help.

Cheers

I was getting a crash when trying to edit text in a PSD, and the advice on the helpx.adobe.com link here seems to solve it. The crash was after a big Windows 10 update this week, 30/31 May 2018.

I worked through the 'workaround' on the link https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/invalid-numeric-entry-integer-96-8-required-photoshop.html (added the key to my registry, but if you follow this backup your registry first, just in case..).
After the Windows creator update last week, which I only just got round to installing, I had a few problems with my Photoshop 2015 - note I run Photoshop on Windows in Parallels on an iMac (weird?, but my company develops cross platform software so we need to run stuff on both Win + Mac). E.g. when I tried to edit some text Photoshop crashed, after editing a file (simple move a layer) the file would not Save. Most things gave me message about "not having enough memory".
The fix on the link definitely fixed all this - it's just that you wouldn't normally expect to edit the Registry to get stuff to work...!!
Good luck.

Hi Martin,

I'm glad to hear that this resolved most of the issues. As far as when the fix will be released, this problem is under investigation by engineering.

Regarding  oil paint and other filters, we track issues with unique threads. Are there threads regarding the issues you're referring to (or have you posted any)? I did a search and I wasn't sure which issue you were referring to, but I'd be happy to check into them if you would like to post to those threads looking for an update. Also, if you haven't already, clicking Me Too will add weight to the issue.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,
No I have not raised these other issues as a separate thread.
Problems with 'oil paint filter' could be down to my computer, Dialogue box opens, message pops up saying something about drivers then Photoshop crashes.
Also since the latest update Photoshop is even slower to open.
Should I open a separate thread for the above?

Hannah, I want to pass along my experience regarding this known issue. I have asked for the upgrade to the newest Adobe Suite for several years. We had been using CS 6. I teach photography and felt it was important for my students to have access to the newest version of PhotoShop. I was finally upgraded recently, and this version of PhotoShop is useless. I can't even "auto tone" without getting a message saying my computer doesn't have enough memory, and then when I try to follow the instructions for the workaround, I get the "integer" error message. I have researched it online and tried several options, but today I finally called your help desk. The customer service rep was not helpful at all. First, I could hardly understand him because of his heavy accent. Plus, he wouldn't begin trying to solve my problem until I gave him the email address associated with the account. My IT department sets up all those software accounts and I didn't know it. I have a personal Adobe ID account but he didn't see it. He could not understand my Texas accent any better than I could understand his. Why would a non-customer call for help on this issue? Why not try to resolve the customer's problem? I am beyond frustrated. I am unable to use PhotoShop -- the software we are paying for through our community college account. What a waste of money...

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled cannot open preferences dialog.

This is turning into a nightmare.  I updated to photoshop/lightroom 2018 and I have various problems.  One of which is I cannot open the preferences dialog now.  e.g. If I choose Preferences->Performance I just get warning dialog saying 'an integer between 96 and 8 is required.  Closest value inserted' and I cannot get rid of the dialog.  The preferences dialog does not appear

--

tried this solution and it also worked for Photoshop CC 2018

In Regedit:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop\120.0

Added DWORD "OverridePhysicalMemoryMB" with the value "4000" decimal bas (=24 GB RAM = my installed RAM).

Hannah,

I suppose you are aware that the same issue is becoming a plague for Photoshop Elements (several versions) since the latest Windows 10 (build 1803)?

Same error message plus various other issues, and the only workaround is to edit the Windows registry. Not without risks for a consumer application like Elements.

Will Elements users receive good news in a near future?

OK - I have the same problem - Photoshop crashes every time following RAM full message. I was told I could go into Preference>Performance and change the memory but every time I do that I get the Integer between 96 and 8 message.
I see that there is a link to a page where this can be fixed with a warning that you need to be IT savvy if you go ahead and alter a directory - I am not that savvy and wouldn't risk it.
Is there any other way this can be fixed? I need photoshop to make my living and not very happy at all since it is now completely useless.

Actually I have received two replies for which I am very grateful.
Both of them, however, refer me to the same page where it says that "customers who are comfortable with altering their registry" can follow instructions how to fix this.
Unfortunately I am for from comfortable going anywhere near my registry and am pretty certain that if I did and if I modified it it would result in disaster!

Robert Kimball, in my case the solution to the anomaly was between Hannah and myself because it was unique. My computer was missing a couple of ".dll" files and the download to fix the problem could not be completed.  In addition, my antivirus software was getting in the way. So yes, Hannah took the time to figure out my specific problem and walk me through the process.  I am 100% sure that she will get in touch with you if you contact her to the email address she provided and will provide you with what you need.  It's a holiday weekend, so maybe you have to be patient.

Good Morning,

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Photoshop: Question about RAM allocation.

Just curious as to why I have such a variation of available RAM between this version of my Photoshop 19.1.3 compared to the previous version 18.1.2. I was double checking my preferences and noticed that the available RAM is low.

My installed RAM is 32.0 GB with (31.9 GB usable) Photoshop says I have less available RAM than I had in the previous version (18.1.2) and I would like to understand how PS calculates the available RAM. My Photoshop's working fine and so is my System which had no changes.

Below is the comparison and I've included my System info.

This version 19.1.3
Performance Panel: Memory Usage:
Available RAM is 25593 MB
Ideal Range 14076-18427 MB
Photoshop Use 15355 MB or 60%

Previous version 18.1.2
I took snapshots of my preferences in the previous version of PS and the available ram was higher:
Performance Panel: Memory Usage
Available RAM was 29419 MB
Ideal Range 16180-21182 MB
Photoshop Use 20299 MB or 69%

This is the top part of my System info through PS CC.

With Elements Windows store version, the folders are missing, so the help file requires creating those missing folders:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/integer-50-8-required-closest-value-inserted-photoshop...

Note:

If you have installed Photoshop Elements from Windows App Store, then you will not have the above-mentioned folder structure. You must create the specified folder structure within HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ folder in your registry. The Photoshop Elements version number depends on the product’s version installed on your system. For example, for 2018 the folder name should be 16.0, for version 15 the folder name should be 15.0, and for version 14 the folder name should be 14.0.

Maybe it's the same in Photoshop?

Glad you noticed that Michel. We might want to add that to the helpx document that pertains to Photoshop too while we wait for the update to come out. Offhand I wasn't aware that installing from the Windows App Store would configure files differently. However I think there might be a connection to your version and the difference in file configuration. I'll test it by installing 2015 on my Windows test machine to see what files are created. At any rate, I spoke with the developer who worked on this issue and we don't see any harm in creating the that file and then proceeding with the other steps, so please try that and let us know how it goes, David.

Hannah

Added in the 120 folder.  I have a 64-bit system, so do I select 32-bit DWORD or 64-bit QWORD?  Workaround instructions show a 32-bit solution.

That file is version specific. I installed 2015 on my test machine and the file you should have (and where you should make the change) is 90.0. As far as the DWORD, that isn't a reference to your 64-bit OS. In other words you can just follow the instructions. You want the 32-bit DWORD.

Hi, Hannah,

I tried to modify the 90.0. file as you suggested.  My Surface Pro 4 appears to have 4 GB RAM, so that is the decimal value I added to the new  OverridePhysicalMemoryMB Key.  Same error message appeared.

This is a workaround and it seems to help most users encountering this issue. However, it is only a workaround.

What I would suggest is that you try the build with the fix. If you email me your Adobe ID I can send you an invitation to download the build with the fix. Otherwise it will become publicly available in the next update to Photoshop.

Thanks,
Hannah

davidburdettarchitect@gmail.com appears to be the Adobe ID.  However,  I logged into my Adobe Account and didn't see my Photoshop Lisc. there.  That was weird.

Thanks for your help, by the way.  I'm sure it's frustrating to have all of these problem crop up from a matter out of your control.

Hi David,

Thanks for your patience. Like you, I didn't find an associated subscription with that email. Would you please email me your full name, address, phone number and/or any other information that I might be able to cross reference to find you? My email is pictured in the comment above, but I'll paste it again for your reference.

Thanks,Hannah

My photoshop will not let me do anything. When I go to save or do anything in photoshop it says "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)"

Sharon - I had to do the registry fix as I described earlier in this thread, but backup registry first of course. I got 'out of memory' errors all over PS, couldn't save, same as you.

The workaround is to edit the Windows registry (less than two minutes...)

You can stop using Elements/Photoshop until they are updated or you can do the regedit.  Your choice.  You don't need to backup your registry, just to the simple steps.

Michel,
Registry manipulation workaround does not seem to work on all Windows platforms.  I have tried it several times with no effect!

Adobe and Windows need to coordinate a proper solution, so that users that do not have an understanding of registry editing can have a solution!

David,
If you browse the huge flow of posts in the Elements and Photoshop forums, you'll see that most users have solved their problems with the registry edit.  A tiny part reported that it did not work for them. It appears that they did not  edit the registry correctly and many of them reported later that it worked when they did it properly. So, I had to post a test a few days ago to see how they could check by themselves if the registry had been correctly edited.
You just use the menu Help >> System Info to see if the the available RAM for Elements or Photoshop has been increased after your edit.
I have still to get a single feedback that when the amount has been increased the issues still persist.

Adobe and Windows need to coordinate a proper solution, so that users that do not have an understanding of registry editing can have a solution!
Adobe has not taken hold of your computer and modified its code overnight. That's what Microsoft did to modify the code of the OS resources offered to other programming editors. Simply roll back to the old Windows version and wait for a solution. Perhaps from Microsoft in June? For Adobe, a solution is announced when the next Photoshop CC update comes. No official  annoucement for Elements today. The workaround has been published by Adobe more than three months ago.
About the registry edit, it takes less than two minutes and has been performed by just normal users having no special knowledge; simply by following step by step basic instructions. With now probably  more than one thousand of successful edits, can you find an example of a situation where the edit has caused serious problems?

That said, the way the empirical workaround  solves the issue is still mysterious as well as other important questions:

- Why does the issue appear only in a part of the users after the Windows update? The issue has not even been mentioned in other Elements forums, which make me suspect that most users don't have the problem like me

- Why did the issue appear before the Windows update?   For Elements, it was apparently only on powerful configs with much RAM, SSD etc.

- When the issue is solved, you don't see in the Windows task manager that more memory is really freed...- It seems that if you enter different decimal values, 4 000  or 24 000 or 4 096, that works as well?

That's why I suspect that there are more parties involved than Adobe and Microsoft :  software, antivirus, hardware drivers...

Why is it that I can't stop receiving noticications about the converssation? As much as I try, I can't get out of this and I keep getting emails about it. I clicked on the "stop receiving notifications about this topic" but when I click it, it just brings me to this page. Isn't this illegal of adobe to do this????

I think, with this integer problem is caused by Adobe reaching to far and beyond their capabilities. They should do much more testing before releasing parts of programs that are so unstable like this. In the old days of Photoshop is was much more stable and reliable. It seems the new generations of engineers are not nearly as knowledgeable as in the old days. They're trying so hard to make money that they release upgrades without testing them fully. That's really where the problem lies.

After trying many things I finally found out how to stop following a thread. My email was being bombarded with responses from this thread. I clicked on the "stop receiving" link but it just brought me back to this thread without saying anything about stopping to receive notifications. I finally found out you have to go to your profile and uncheck notifications...4 or them.
Anyway, WHEW!!! FINALLY!!!  This should be illegal, and actually I think it is.

Robert - to be fair on Adobe, I only saw this error after a big Windows Update, which suggests the update introduced the problem, which is out of Adobe's control. I'm sure it is something they will address in the next update of PS CC.

I'd like to openly thank Hannah for her dedicated assistance in helping with a solution to my problem.  She stuck with me and looked for a solution based on the technical information I pprovided.  Unlike other "champions" on this forum who just kept referring to the same old string of posts, she dug in and actually helped me.  Thanks again, Hannah!

David,You don't seem to realize that thousands of Photoshop and Elements have the same Microsoft issue. The merit of Hannah is not only to have helped you personally, it was already to find and publish the solution.

Do you really think she can help thousands of users as she did for you? If you want to make readers of this forum think that the solution is to wait for her personal help instead of trying the very successful 'same old string of post', you are not doing them a good service.

I'm glad the fix helped. Michel is right that I don't have time to help everyone personally -- a video with the workaround for this issue had 54,000 views as of yesterday. Needless to say I wouldn't have been able to help over 50,000 people personally. For the record I really appreciate the champions on this site who do their best to disseminate information. They do their best to curate publicly available downloads/information, but obviously they do not have access to internal software fixes. And for that matter we need people to try out a fix before it's released also. The more people who vet the fix before it's released the better, so thank you to everyone here who helped us validate the fix.

I agree with David that Hannah is to be praised for her efforts to help us with this issue. We don't think we can sit and wait for a CSR to provide us personal help, but it's nice to have a rep from the company at least guide us to the resource that offers the solution. Give Hannah the credit she is due, please.

That's already done, here :
The merit of Hannah is not only to have helped you personally, it was already to find and publish the solution.
Maybe also read all the posts of this discussion to find more praise ?

Can you imagine the number of thanks I have already received by repeating the same solution (her solution)  which too many users were too lazy to search for ?
