Select & mask "Onion view" now crashes when selected. This is since the last release!

Has anyone else had this issue? Using Windows 10 - Graphics (Radeon 9000 series) up to date drivers. 32 gb ram .

Do I need to go back to the earlier version? as I use select and mask daily this is causing me lost time.

This is the error message!!

I await any response

Mine crashes as well. I don't get an error message though. Photoshop just stops responding. The rest of the computer keeps on working though.

I get random crashes on different mask choices.  Sometimes onion works, sometimes not.  Black mask takes ~ 3 seconds to update when a slider is moved.  Sometimes I get the "Program Error" message.  Other times PS goes back to the main screen as if I never clicked on "Select and Mask."

I have to say I'm extremely disappointed.  I've used PS 6 successfully for many years with no problems.  PS CC is slower and buggy as hell.  What a waste of time and money.

Hi, Jeffrey.  Windows 10 Pro, I7-6800K, 16GB (80% PS), 256GB flash scratch drive.  It usually opens with the onion option.  When I press F to change mask styles, it sometimes does it, sometimes comes up with the "Could not complete due to program error" and sometimes just closes the Select & Mask dialog and goes back as if I never asked for it.

This is only one of many problems.  Yesterday after working for a couple of hours, PS switched the cursor style from Standard to Precision.  When I went to Edit/Preferences, it said I had Standard selected.  So I selected Precision and got the Standard cursor.  So I selected Standard and it went back to Precision.

Zooming to 100% in bridge got to the point where it was taking 40-50 seconds.  It took a reboot to return everything to normal.  No other app was running.

You might be hitting a known issue with scratch disks. This will be fixed in a update which will come out very soon.

The update went out this AM: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop-cc-2017-1-1-may-2017-update-now-ava... Let me know if this fixes your issue. If not, we can do some more troubleshooting.

Hi Tony, what does the event viewer say the faulting module is? If you go into Preferences > Performance and click Advanced Options, then uncheck OpenCL and restart Photoshop, does it still crash?

I actually found something that fixed my PS Select and Mask. Still need to see how stable the fix is.

I increased the available memory for Photoshop to 30 GB and changed the scratch disk to the SSD non-operating drive.

I've used to have these settings but one of these updates must have reset them.

If you restart you computer, does the free memory change? If you start Photoshop with the shift key to disable 3rd party plug-ins, does it work properly? If it still crashes, what does the event viewer say the faulting module is?

The oddest part is, if I do a quick selection, then choose select and mask from the toolbar (not drop down menu) it works great the first time, if I have to do a edit and click select and mask a second time it locks up. If I choose select and mask from the drop down it locks up right off the bat.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Properties panel for masks froze Photoshop and often very laggy.

The new(ish) properties window for layer masks is very laggy (especially when changing "Views"). It actually just froze up my Photoshop working on a fairly simple image with just a few curve adjustment layers.

I have a relatively new machine at work and this is still a problem. I'm not against improving features, but this sacrifices instant feedback and a more simple mask panel, and mostly is a bit of a pain so far for little reward. Not really a fan of features being rolled out before they are ready for primetime, and suggest that there be a parallel way to use old way of dealing with masks until they've worked out all the bugs with this new way.

Hi Alice, Sorry for the trouble with Select and Mask.
Are you on Mac or Windows? Which version of the operating system?
Which version of Photoshop are you using?

How is it if you disable the GPU or update the video driver? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html#GPUandgraphicsdrivertrouble...

Regards
Pete
