Photoshop CC 2017.1: Nik DFine2 hanging in Sierra

After this update Nik Dfine2 hangs on MacOS. Sierra.   this appears on 2 different machines. Uninstalled NIK tools and reinstalled it.. but no change .. Anyone ?

Hi Kees, 

Sorry for the freezing with DFine2. Were you running CC 2017.0.1 before this update?
Was the DFine2 plug-in working OK in that version?

On the Nik page, the system requirements for the plugin don't show compatibility for CC 2017, so hard to tell if the plug-in has been updated or not.

Have you tried going through the general troubleshooting steps yet?

Resetting the preferences may be good step to start with. 

Let us know how that goes.

Hi.. thanks for the reply  ..

Yes before all was ok  .. and stand alone the plugin works fine. its in photoshop only. 
I even deleted CC and reinstalled everything . didn't help

Dfine is not really hanging   but its terrible terrible slow, and gets quicker when you move your pointer over it when running.

I tried Nik suggestion of deleting duplicates of Fonts. Deleted Nik and reloaded but still same. It is too slow. Works with Lightroom. Is Nik or Adobe can help to fix ?

Was working fine with 2017 prior to this upgrade.

I'm having the exact same problem.  In my case, it's hanging.  All the NIK programs are slow now, but this one just stalls out.

Hi, I'm having the exact same issue with nik collection terrible slow, especially Dfine2 hanging on, after I upgraded Photoshop CC 2017 yesterday. Do you have some good solution to solve this problem? I already did uninstall and reinstall Nik Collection several times, but I don’t know how to downgrade my Photoshop CC 2017.

You want to use the Creative Cloud App to install 2017 (18.0) — assuming that one runs Dfine without a problem— or 2015.5 (17.0.2), which I've tested and it IS fine. You have to dig down to get to the build to reinstall, but it works. I haven't tried running 17.0  at the same time as the update, but you can run 2015.5 at the same time.

If you roll back to Photoshop CC 2017, all the Nik Collection will work correctly. The upgrade to version CC 2017.1 by Adobe, has caused the problem. Also, there was a problem with the Topaz filters, but within days the company introduced a small app that when run for each filter makes them compatible. I am running MacOS Sierra 10.12.4.

If you have CC, you can always reinstall an old version (see above on how to). If you reinstall 2015.5, it will live alongside 2017.1 nicely—meaning you can even have them both running at the same time. So you can do your edits in 2017, then pop into 2015.5 to run Nik filters without having to close down 2017.1.  You'll want to save your file out of 2017.1 first, of course, and open it into 2015.5 without leaving it open in 2017.1, but you won't have to keep quitting the apps and relaunching them.

I have tried the method as described above but when I click on view previous versions, it doesn't show the drop down of previous versions.  Any help?

No need to rollback. Just install the 2017.1.1 update to correct the problem: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/uptodate.html

And for future awareness, since the Creative Cloud app hides so much and you will probably want to be able to go back a version now and again, when you see "PREVIOUS VERSIONS>" down in the list, clicking on the arrow will show, right beneath it "FIND ADDITIONAL APPS."   To the far right of that will be something with a down pointing arrow. Click on the arrow to get, at the bottom of the list,"View Previous Versions." You can filter the list according to type of app if you like.

I don't use DFine, Sharpener or Viveza anymore, but I do use CEP, SEP, and Analog. Those last 3 have been running all along without any problems beyond the occasional crash.  Testing now, DFine runs, but so slowly, it may as well not. Sharpener Pro runs, but is slow to preview. Viveza also runs, but painfully slowly. All of these tend to "stutter." That is, for a moment they speed up, but then balk again. DFine is far and away the worst, but I wouldn't want to use any of them if I didn't have to. I should say I'm in 1.0 now.

I tested them all in 2015 and there's no issue with them whatsoever. Google is giving Nik away for free now, so I seriously doubt it will update any of them. I can say, though, it's not the OS (I'm still running Yosemite) and it's not the computer. It's between Adobe and Nik and those 3 plugins. Well, I don't use HDR, but it works fine on a single image—just tested.

Hi, I have the same issue with DFine2 on Sierra 10.12.4. I have downgraded my Photoshop CC 2017 back to the version 2017.0.1 and DFine2 works fine again.

Tested this on my MacPro 5,1 running OSX.10.10.5 and Dfine just hangs indefinitely on Working... all the other Nik filters are behaving as expected.

You're not finding that Sharpener Pro and Viveza run more slowly in the current 2017 than in 2015.5? I'm also running Yosemite, on a 2009 Nehalem 8 core. Dunno anymore what it's number is. Dfine will move a bit in the status bar (and visibly in the document) if I click in the window, and then it sits again, thinking. . . thinking. . .

Yeah, you're completely right... guess i didn't dig deep enough. The Efex filters seem to be working ok, but the Sharpening and Viveza are a total mess.

I see the Nik issue(s) with MacBook Pro 15" mid-2015 model (no touch bar) running OS X 10.11.6.

Hope you guys at Adobe can work out what it is you have changed between 2017.0 and 2017.1 that may be causing the Nik apps to fail in these ways - and that you can step back. As you know Google is no longer supporting their Nik apps any more, but I think there's a lot of us using them in our workflow.

You are correct, the Nik collection will work fine with CC 2017, the problem is since the upgrade to CC 2017.1. It appears that Adobe have changed the way CC 2017.1 handles graphics. Personally, I have rolled back to CC 2017 which is very stable and works perfectly on a Mac. I believe Adobe needs to sort this out, because there is also a problem with other filters.

Not so far, although Adobe will say it's up to Google to upgrade the Nik collection, who have already stated, they are doing no further modifications to the collection. I believe it's an Adobe problem, because filters from other manufacturers exhibit the same poor speed performance.

It was a serious problem for me that PS was not integrating with MBP2016 and PS. So serious that I complained to Apple and they took back my MBP2016 13" w touch bar and I went back to getting another iMac27 (2015), but then PS failed to integrate w NIK there also so I thought maybe Adobe PS RIP forever, Then Adobe used the fix today and I am back up and running. I am concerned about the caveat of of disclaiming future compatibility. Since Google is not supporting the deal, the future of the mission with Apple and Adobe becomes a slippery sloap. Wonder why Adobe just doesn't adopt a "Control Point Technology" option already to replace the need for Vivenza? That would certainly make sense.

I was having the same problem with Dfine2 since updating to the latest version of Photoshop. I have just uninstalled it and re-installed 2017.0.0 and all seems fine. Hopefully Adobe will sort this out in the next update.

Same problems as everyone else. Updated to the latest version of Photoshop and the NIK plug ins entered 'slo mo' mode. Re-installed version 17.0.0 and all working OK. Must be something done in the latest update to cause the problems. Respectfully ask Adobe to either fix the problem or explain why the NIK plugins won't work with the latest upgrade.

Not sure if the issue is related but after I did the Photoshop update, I then downgraded so the Nik Plugins worked but ever since downgrading, I get this message in Lightroom



But yet it appears I am using the ACR 9.10

Is this fix for Define 2 problem, downgrading photoshop is not real answer. As it works in Lightroom- I am not in hurry, until Adobe fixes the issue!

I think the main concern for people is knowing whether Adobe can or will fix the problem especially if the issue lies with outdated Nik software.

Some feedback from Adobe would certainly be appreciated one way or another.

We're looking at whether we can workaround the problem and would like to keep them alive as long as possible - despite Google no longer supporting them.

That said, we're moving ahead with compiler updates, OS updates, etc. There's no guarantee that Nik plug-ins will work forever in future versions Photoshop, macOS and Windows.

Thanks for the update Jeffery.  I think there are a LOT of us who still use Nik as our main filter software and it's also in turn a big part of our Photoshop/Lightroom experience.  We appreciate your efforts in keeping it going!

You just need to update camera RAW separately in LR. It's not connected with the other problem of slow response with filters in CC 2017.1.

Hi Jeffrey, Many thanks for the feedback and help with this problem. I think we all realise that the Nik Collection will not be useable forever. At present there are no other filters that have the same functionality, flexibility or produce the same image quality.

Which is why we would love to have Adobe help out in finding someone to take over the plug-ins from Google and make a new go of it. They'll have  gold to start with.

THANK YOU!  NIK is now working again.  I will NOT be updating Photoshop again, however.  It is too bad, because NIK is such a great program, & while I only use 2 of the plug ins on a regular basis, they have become pretty essential to my work flow.

There's no reason not to update Photoshop. You can update without uninstalling the last version, so you can keep 2017.1.1 on your hard drive and run it concurrently with whatever is the next big version. Just click Advanced in the Creative Cloud App when you want to install the upgrade, and tell it NOT to uninstall anything. (They really ought to stop hiding things like this from us in that application<sigh>.)

As long as your computer/OS can run 2017.1.1, you'll have access to Nik AND to the latest and best from Adobe.

And if we're very lucky, Google won't kill off Nik entirely, but sell it to someone.

Jeff, can you confirm that it's Nik (and perhaps Topaz) plug-ins that cause a problem with the Generator Plug-in and there's nothing we can do about it? I've been getting the message constantly since testing the update, and while it sometimes happens after running a Topaz filter, it appears to always happen when I run Nik.  I wouldn't care since I don't use Generator for its intended function, but I do use Doco, which uses Generator, and the only cure I can find is quitting PS and launching it again.

I think it's definitely related to plug-ins, but I've also just recently upgraded to El Capitan (which this old 2009 Mac Pro wasn't designed for), so I'm not at all sure if that isn't part of the reason I'm seeing it so much now.
