Photoshop CC 2015: Text Problem

Whenever I open a new image or open an image, either way, when I use the text tool and type, no letters come out. I been using Photoshop for about 2 years now and I've never had this problem and I'd HATE to have to reinstall or do anything like that...the size isn't too small, too big, 0% opacity or 0% fill...I'm not sure what's going on. Please help!

Howdy SS,

There are many things that could have gone wrong, but the best way to troubleshoot this is to click Window > Character to view your Character Panel.  In the upper-right corner of that panel is a flyout menu.  Select it and choose Reset Character.  Now try it.  You should be back in business.

Thanks,
David

I tried that, and it didn't work. Normally you know that whenever you make a text box there's the blinking line so you know where you'll type? That line doesn't even appear and when I type something, press CTRL+A to select it all and try to change the size, nothing is highlighted so it's like I never even typed anything...

No, a color sampler (look it up in the documentation).

OK, that rules out a few possibilities. Thanks for checking.

When you type and commit the layer, look in the Layers Panel.  What is the name of the layer?  The words you typed?  If so, they you're having a display problem.  I'd love to see a screenshot of your app after you've created a new doc, added a new text box, typed in some text, and committed it.

Thanks,
David

Hello, I've typed "Testing" in a text box and here it is;

New doc: http://prntscr.com/8n3pt3 and http://prntscr.com/8n3pwh
Text box: http://prntscr.com/8n3q15
Typed text: ...just typed testing.. http://prntscr.com/8n3q5c
Finished text: http://prntscr.com/8n3q9v

I guess I have a display problem then?

thank you! just realizing the problem is such help. What now of course though?

You're zoomed out a bit, could the 12 point type just be too small to see?
Check the resolution of the document as well -- 12 point text at 6 pixels per inch would only be 1 pixel tall...

Does it work on a 16-bit or 8-bit file? The file in your screenshot is 32-bit.

Please follow these EXACT instructions:

1) try creating a new file using the preset for Default Photoshop Size under Document Type in the File > New dialog.  Please do NOT change any parameters!
2) open the Character Panel and from the flyout click > Reset Character
3) open the Paragraph Panel and from the flyout click > Reset Paragraph
4) activate the Type tool and click ONCE in the center of the document, then type just a couple words like, "Hello world" or whatever

What happened?  It worked, right?

Looking carefully at your screenshots, it looks like you're trying to create a text box that is too small to display what you want to type -- you set your image size to 930 x 230 pixels at 3200 dpi.  That's a crazy size and most fonts can't display in that space unless you set the point size to 1 or 2 pt.

Thanks,
David

p.s. -- please do NOT bump your messages -- that doesn't help in anyway...

I tried that and it didn't work for me, my wife got it going on her computer but she doesn't remember what she did.
where would I see the text box size? That relates to the problem. First somehow the text color got set to white (on white) but now I see it is trying to type into a miniscule box

Hi Peter,

If you click on a layer that contains type with the Type tool active, the bounding of the text box should appear automatically.  The exception would be if you're doing point text, but that doesn't have a constraint on displaying, so not what you have.  Even if you enter white text on a white background, the layer's name will reflect the first couple dozen characters you type.

Now, you said my steps didn't work.  What happened when you tried them?  Step #2 should make your text Myriad Pro, 12pt, and black.  Is that not what you're seeing?  What happens when you type after doing step #2?

Thanks,
David
