Photoshop CC 2015 freezes randomly on Windows 10

Upgraded to Adobe CC 2015 from CS6 and was happy until the freezes started happening randomly within the first 5 minutes of use.

i have tried other fixes like disabling rulers (didn't work and I need them anyways), switching my scratch disks (I use an internal 256 GB SSD for scratch only), changing history states, turning off firewalls, etc.

I wish I could give more information about why the freezes happen, but it seems VERY random. Everything in Photoshop will freeze up mid-whatever. Everything else on the computer is fine when switching out of Photoshop.

Also of note, I tried installing Photoshop CC 2014 after this happened and it had none of these issues.

Have you tried disabling all third party plugins and extension panels?
Have you tried disabling ALL extension panels (even the Adobe ones) from Photoshop's preferences, then restarting the app?

Hi Chris,

I tried all those and restarted and am having the same issues. When I click text on the menu bar they lag horribly.

OK, that could be a corrupt font or OS font cache. (see https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/... )

But more likely it's something outside - like a utility program (antivirus, firewall, etc.).

Working through this now, Chris. Thanks for the speedy replies. I will let you know after I run all the font diagnostics.

I have went through all the steps in the KB article you linked.

Setting Font Preview to None seems to have fixed this issue. Is there a way for me to fix this further so I can get Font Previews back?

Thank you!

I'm running out of ideas that I can tell you how to debug remotely.
I'd like to get someone from support to give you a call -- but it may not happen until after the holidays (too many are traveling).

That's fine. Should I bump this post for you mid-January?

Yeah, not a bad idea - in case I lose my notes from this laptop.

Following up on this...I've tried installing/reinstalling and wiping preferences and it still occurs, but turning off the Font Preview does continue to fix it. Sorry I'm a month late!

OK, so that still sounds like the cause is a corrupt font or OS font cache.  Unless you can identify the corrupt bits, all you can do is leave the font preview off.

Hi!

I'm not sure if I should post a new thread, but I will try here first since OP is very close to my situation.

I started using Photoshop CC 2015 on a Windows 10 PC a few months ago. Everything was working great, but about 2-4 weeks ago I've noticed a recurring "freeze". It usually happens (a few times a day) when I go back to Photoshop after working on another program. I choose for example the rectangular selection marquee tool and Photoshop stops responding. Everything else works great (Unity editor, chrome, etc.), it is only PS that completely stops. I can't even minimize or maximise the PS window. I can only wait for it to start responding again. Usually the freeze lasts between 1-5 minutes. If I launch Task manager I can see that PS is using a lot of my CPU during the freeze. Below is a SS of my Task manager.

Here's my system information:

After this freeze (which I've captured with the Task manager) I noticed that I had huge Photoshop temp files almost completely filling my SSD drive, but I usually make sure that I have at least 50-100GB of free space on my SSD when I work with PS and the freezes still happen.

Well that's all that comes to mind at the moment! Hopefully you'll have some suggestions for me!

Thanks,
Veera

I have a very similar computer set up to Veera ... i5 4590, 16 GB DDR3, Asus motherboard, GEForce 660 graphic card, Windows 10 64-Bit. Built this computer in Sept 2013 and it worked like a charm, fast to load, could have multiple Adobe programs and Word open at same time, it was perfect. I had 2015 loaded before upgrading to Windows 10. The ONLY problem I had with Photoshop was occasionally text layers would be slow to render. Photoshop always hangs in Win10. Today it just keeps freezing, have rebooted 4 times, closed all other programs. I have a deadline and can't produce a 300 x 300 pixel app ad for a client. Working on it for over an hour now.

The whole system freezes or Photoshop freezes? It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Directions for sharing your system info from Photoshop: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop_how_do_i_share_my_system_information

Also having this issue on my work PC and have been for the last couple of updates. I'm running the latest PS 2017 CC (ver. 2016113.r.29 x64) on an HP Z440. The thing is, I've a work colleague with the same machine who is also experiencing the same problem which leads me to believe this is a hardware compatibility issue.

HP Z440 Specs:

  • Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit

  • Xeon E5-1620 3.50Ghz

  • Nvidia Quadro K620

  • 16GB DDR4 RAM

  • 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA

I'm wondering at this point if this isn't a HDD issue - is there anyone experiencing this freezing problem with Photoshop installed on an SSD.

Also, my colleague has hardly any fonts installed, over the stock Windows fonts (I've got a lot) which in my mind reduces the chance of it being a corrupted font causing this (We both have our font preview set to 'none' in the Type menu - this apparently helped some people with a corrupted font).

We've also tried using all the older versions of Photoshop - as far back as CC 2014, still with the random freezing happening on all versions.

Other than that, I'm fresh outta ideas - this issue is driving me insane.

I am using a brand new ASUS Zenbook Pro with the i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.59 GHz, 16 GB RAM, and SSD, and I am now experiencing the Photoshop freeze after using it without error at least 20 times or more over the course of the last 10 days. It happens when I try to modify existing text in a PSD. This freeze has occurred several times now.

I am having a similar issue, the one thing i have noticed is that it spools up all my spinning drives even though it does not need to write to them, ie, the only scratch disk it utilizes is my C SSD startup drive.

I have a i7 4790, 32Gb DDR3 ram,  Nvidia GeForce GT740 4Gb and a 256Gb Sandisk Ultra running on a ASUS h97-Pro running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit ,

it all started doing this after my upgrade to 2017 CC from CS6
