Photoshop CC 2015: Freezing when opening raw files

In the past I've had no issues opening RAW files in Photoshop. Then about last month, or so, when I tried to open (Canon .CR2 from 5D Mark II) RAW files in Photoshop CC 2015 it would take about 5 minutes for it to open the file in Adobe Camera RAW. Now if I even just click to select a RAW file in the Open dialog box Photoshop freezes completely. I'm running Windows 7, haven't added any new software or hardware. No past problems...I can't find any info on what's going on. Help!!!

Freezing and crashing are two very different behaviors.

What version of ACR are you using?
Did you install the Photoshop CC 2015.0.1 update?

In the OS open dialog, you are waiting on the OS to show you something, not Photoshop or ACR. Did you install a codec or something to preview/thumbnail raw files? If so, you could be hung waiting for it to do it's work.

Thanks for the response Chris... It freezes (not responding) as opposed to crashes (shuts down). Only effects Photoshop not the computer. I'm running Photoshop CC 2015.0.1 and ACR version 9.2.0.486. The computer has never shown me an image thumbnail of the RAW files and I have not installed anything to do so. I just use the corresponding jpeg to tell what the pic is. It doesn't matter if I double-click the RAW file, drag & drop, or use the Open dialog box the result is the same... "not responding".

And that's just touching a RAW file in the Open dialog box. I don't even get the chance to push the "open" button.

1) "The open dialog is entirely controlled by the OS - so something at a system level is trying to read the RAW file, and hanging." - Ok, but it locks up when I double-click or drag-and-drop RAW files as well.

2) "What else changed on your system since it was last working?" - It was lagging about 5 minutes, or so, when opening RAW files but did open them. Then I upgraded to Windows 10. It started freezing on RAW files. Reverted back to Windows 7 but still freezing. No other software changes have been made. No upgrades or additions.

3) "Try showing the problem details, it would be interesting to see if Windows can determine which module is hanging. " - I don't know how to do this... I don't even know what you mean :(

1) Ok, that helps, and means that something may be going wrong with ACR
Possibly something in ACR's GPU usage.

Have you updated your video card drivers from the GPU maker's website recently?

3)
In the freeze dialog, at the bottom left, there is a button that says "view problem details".
Or you can look up prior events in the system event viewer or reliability reports.

Crud, it doesn't identify the module that hung.

Still try updating the video card drivers from the GPU maker's website.

If that doesn't help, then try waiting for ACR to open, disable GPU usage in ACR, then quit and try again. If that works, we'll need to get a lot more information to determine what is going wrong with the drivers on your system.

I did get it to open by double-clicking a RAW file and letting it open Photoshop that way. The ACR prefs show that GPU is disabled due to an error. I checked the box anyway and it did open the RAW file through the Open dialog box just fine but now reads this error...

Disabled due to an error means that something went wrong with the driver. I suspected it was enabled but just slow, and wanted to test with it disabled.
But the information you've provided helps - since it means you weren't using the GPU in the first place.

No, you need to update from AMD's website, not from Microsoft. The drivers on Microsoft's site are frequently years out of date, while the drivers on the GPU maker's website are updated almost every month.

Is there a reason why you leave them in your CAmera Raw, I import in "Convert to DNG" and have no issues like this. About the only problem I don't seem to have right now.
