Photoshop CC 2014: Photoshop asking to update fonts every time I open the same file

The problem is that every time i'm opening a psd file Photoshop I got a warning "Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now?" If I hit update then save the file, close it and open again I have the same warning. The font I'm using in the project Myriad Pro open type. I notice also that after updating the font layers, they looks different, like with different antialiasing. And the same is happening if I don't update the font layers during open, but later, when I want to edit the text. Immediately after hitting text frame with the text tool to edit it, fonts are changing they look. I switched to another Mac a week ago and I have the same problem. I'm on OSX 10.9.4.

Please help!

Hi Dariusz,

You get the warning when there is a font in your layer that you do not have on your system.  That is the reason that the font layer looks different after update -- you're using a different font.  Unless you removed it, you have Myriad Pro, as Photoshop ships with it.  The fact that the font looks different after the update means that the font is being changed, probably to Myriad Pro.  Another option is that you have a different version of Myriad Pro and it is interfering with the standard one (Mac OS has no version control for fonts).

After update, your file should contain the correct font (barring some shinanigans with the font version).  If that is not what you're are seeing, I would suggest you open the file, manually set the font to something distinct which you have on your system, and then saving and close the file.  You should find on next launch that you are no longer prompted.  If that is not the case, please contact me here and I would be happy to walk you through a trouble-shooting session via the web or look at your file or both.

Thanks,
David

Thanks for response but it is not helpful at all.
First of all I know what this message means and when it is displayed. Secondly I have only one Myriad Pro font installed. I double checked that on new machine and on the old one. Believe me I was trying everything. The worst thing is that even if I open the file, update fonts , save it , close it, open it once again immediately and I will get this messages once again, without changing anything in the system, fonts folder or anything else. It's is really strange but for sure it is not a problem with missing fonts.

On images that I attached to latest post you can see that after opening file and not choosing to update fonts automatically if i would try to edit this text layer font is starting to looks different thenif I would select this sentence , change the font weight to light for example, and then back to regular one it will be fine, however if I would start to edit this layer once again I will get warring about missing fonts once again.

So its not about missing fonts it is something wrong with Photoshop. please help!

Dariusz, everything you are describing says that you are, as I said, having trouble with your installed version of Myriad Pro.  Mac is NOTORIOUS for corrupt font caches.  That is the most likely cause of this problem.  You can (usually) solve that by going through the steps laid our here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html

What you perceive as a bug or flaw in Photoshop is actually a feature.  Because not all users have all fonts, PS stores a raster version of a given layer as well as the vector/font version.  The change you are seeing is because, after you say "ok" to update your missing font, those two are no longer in sync...again, pointing to a problem with your installation of that particular font.  If you edit a text layer, you MUST ALWAYS update the font.  There is no other way to edit a text layer.  Therefore, the font is ALWAYS changed in such cases.

If you continue to have problems after trying the steps in the KB doc, I can look at your file and/or do a web-hosted screenshare.

Thanks,
David

Thanks for response David.
I know that this warning it's not a bug, i'm using photoshop from 9 years. But in this case I think it is a bug.

I have tried all steps in KB doc. I have cleared font caches, I passed the test made using you script etc. In Font Book everything looks good too. I even installed different version of Myriad Pro but I still have some issues. It is hard to explain what is going on so I prepared a quick video for you. I couldn't get any free screen capture software that will create .mov or .avi file so it is in .swf format. You can open it for example in the browser. Please check it and let me know. This is really really strange. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5...

Thanks

You video is great, Dariusz, but it would be more helpful to see with the Character panel visible.  It looks like there's some confusion with the fonts on your machine.  Again, Mac does NOT allow for font versioning -- so you may be running into an earlier version of the same font on your machine, something which Apple OSes do not handle well (at all).  I would strongly recommend removing ALL your Myriad Pro fonts, clearing out your cache, and then only adding in the main versions.  See if that works and let me know.  Again, I'm available to do a web-hosted screenshare to trouble-shoot.

Thanks,
David

Hi David, I removed all Myriad pro fonts from my system ( i had only one) I have treid all steps in KB doc, and i still have this problem. Look, even if I would use another version of the same font, and if PS would ask me to update fonts, after updating and saving the file everything should be fine when openning this file next time, right? But it isn't. PS is asking me to update the fonts once again even for files saved and updated a minute before. So there is no chance that someone or something replace fonts to different version in the mean time. And you can see this on my video. Also, as I said previously this happens to my on old as well as new machine. I can provide new video with character pallet visible if you want but believe me nothing is changing there. Please help.

I am having the same exact problem with other fonts. I am not on a mac. I have removed the fonts and re-added the fonts. But every single time I open the files this happens. Just like Dariusz, I can re-do the fonts and save and when I open the file again it says the fonts are missing. The fonts I am using are League Gothic and OFL Sorts Mill Goudy.

I am using the exact font- copied from the computer that created the files. There is no question of this. Also using CS4.

Hi Tara,

CS4 is rather dated.  It does not have any of the font optimizations we've added in the last eight years.  As a result, I wouldn't be at all surprised that you're getting re-queried all the time.  My recommendation would be to upgrade.  I know that's not ideal, but there were issues which were fixed in subsequent versions.

Thanks,
David

Ok I have check everything once again and:
I uninstalled all myriad pro font I had and realised that even after uninstalling, I can still see myriad pro regular and bold versions in photoshop font list. And these two are those which has really bad antialiasing. I searched my computer for other myriad pro fonts and i found few in Photoshop and illustrator pdfl folders and also in iTunes app (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/Fonts/) . After removing all of them I still can see bold and regular versions in photoshop. So there are definitely other versions installed in the system but I don't know where. Even searching in terminal with sudo doesn't show me any other myriad pro locations.
Please help ASAP

Hi Dariusz,

Several questions.

First, does this happen with all files or just this one?  Can you create a file that doesn't use Myriad Pro, save it, close PS, relaunch, and see if it still happens?

Second, when you say that you have multiple versions of Myriad Pro, do you mean multiple versions of the same style (bold, regular, italic, etc) -- it is normal to have each of the styles listed separately.

Finally, can you send the version of PS you're running.  You can get it from Help > System Info -- it's the first line, though the first three would be good.

Thanks,
David
