I was working on this last night with no problem, but today I try editing a file from lightroom using edit in photoshop cc2104, and it is unable to launch the program. This is the first time i saw this error. I ran some disk utility on my mac, but still having issues.

What OS version are you using?
What exact error are you seeing?
What is preventing Photoshop from launching?

thanks Chris, I am using Apple Yosemite. I am not sure, but it just hangs upon displaying the splash screen.

it says searching for plug-ins... and does not get any further than that.
Photoshop CC is able to launch just fine.

That sounds like you have a problem with your disk, or have moved the application and it is now trying to search the entire disk for plugins.

Do you have any third party plugins installed? If so, have you tried disabling them?

Have you run DiskUtility to repair permissions on the volume since you installed MacOS 10.10?

Thank you Chris, but yes I have run the repair permissions utility . Again. Wonder why it was working last night? For some reason, I got signed out of the cloud. So I resigned in and still have the problem.

Without knowing what else changed on your system, I can't even guess.
But something did change on your system that is causing this behavior.

Chris - would you recommend that I do a system restore or just reinstall photoshop cc 2014?

Chris - this is the error message I get - The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 could not be launched.

That is very different from what you said earlier: that Photoshop launched and hung while searching for plugins.

What changed on your system since Photoshop was last working?
What got added, removed, or moved?

This was the message after I had to force quit photoshop. And to the best of my knowledge, nothing changed. NO plug-ins ... etc

You can try uninstalling and reinstalling.
But we still don't know why your system is hanging or taking forever to scan for plugins.

Chris - should I run the uninstall program first?

I tried reinstalling cc2014 from the cloud - still having problems - one thought, delete the entire application including subfolders from my mac - including plug-ins. Then do a fresh install. Where do plug-ins get installed in photoshop cc1014? Thank you!

If you quit Photoshop and hold down the [shift] key when you launch and click [Yes] when it asks if you want to disable 3rd party plug-ins, does PS work correctly?

If the contents of the Plug-ins folder were the cause, then yes, try reinstalling your 3rd party plug-ins using the latest and greatest versions that are compatible with CC 2014 using the 3rd parties original installers (per the instructions I linked to)

I tried reinstalling Nik Collection by Google and it causes Photoshop cc 2014 to hang up. Photoshop CC is just FINE.

Glad to see that you could narrow it down. Most likely Google/Nik pushed an update, and the update introduced the problem. Contact Google/Nik directly and see if they know about this problem with their plugins.

SUCCESS!
What it was that I inadvertently had a Photoshop CC 2014 alias among my applications. So when I went to reinstall photoshop CC 2014, I dropped both apps for photoshop CC 2014 and the alias to the trash. I then reloaded this program and the plug-ins, and it launches blazingly fast now! Thanks for all your assistance.
