I was working with an image of resolution 4k x 38k with 2 guides at every 1080 with small gap. It was working butter smooth until I updated photoshop to 21.2. After the update, it became almost impossible to work with, photoshop was giving performance of like 4-5 fps. I looked deeper and got a suggestion to turn off the guides, it worked properly like older version, but that's not a solution, and it defeats the purpose of guides. How am I supposed to work on a composition without guides? I switched back to 21.1.3 and everything worked fine. I update to latest photoshop 3 times till now and reverted back disappointed. I hope someone at adobe addresses this issue and restore old photoshop performance in 21.2 with guides turned on. I feel like something has changed in the way photoshop display guides. Their is no question of slow system or old drivers. I am working on a threadripper with 96GB ram and rtx 2080 and latest studio drivers. I have also tried changing gpu setting in photoshop to disable guides antialiasing, it was around 10% better but still non-workable giving like 6-7 fps.
