PLEASE fix this! I'm working with multiple 3D materials and it's crashed 3 times while trying to edit textures. It has cost me a LOT of time. Very frustrated just staring at the screen at this point, not wanting to do a thing. I've sent crash reports to Adobe multiple times about this same issue.

Costing me time and money!!Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Photoshop CC: Keeps crashing on Save & Save As.

Hi Andrew,

What email address would be associated with the crash reports that you've submitted? Would you please go to Help > System Info and then copy and paste the contents of that window in your reply?

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

I apologize for being emotional. I realize that does nothing to solve the problem. Just, you know, frustrated in the moment.

Ok, so here's the info you've requested:

Being frustrated is totally understandable! Thanks for the system info. I'll add it to this case.

In the meanwhile, I have a couple of suggestions:

In Photoshop, go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and under Graphics Processor Settings click on Advanced Settings . . . change the drop down option to Basic and then restart Photoshop and try to edit texture again.

Second, the display driver for your video card may contain an incompatibility with Photoshop. Go to this link you can download a different driver (latest may not be best). FYI you may wish to navigate to that link with Internet Explorer because in that browser NVIDIA can automatically detect your video card and make suggestions.

Remember that any changes you make will require a restart of Photoshop to take effect.

Keep me posted.

Thanks!
Hannah

Can we get a sample file? And what texture you are trying to edit?
You can share to daniel at adobe dot com.

While we continue to look into the issue... try this:

nVidia has an updated driver, as of September 5, https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/137614/en-us

It may help to resolve any issues.

Thanks for your reply Daniel. I've had yet another crash just now. Let's just say it's been a bad day..

Anyway, as far as attaching a sample file. The file itself is quite large, almost 1 Gb, so that's probably not possible. I can try to reduce it down to a single layer or something and attach.

Hannah, I did try changing it to Basic in Advanced Settings (pretty sure I've tried that before actually) to no avail.

Daniel I will try out that driver. I've got nothing to lose at this point.

I know crash reports are quite lengthy, but I will go ahead and paste it here. Hope that's ok.

The driver is currently downloading. In the meantime, here is the stripped down sample file.

Thank you,

Does the stripped down file crash as well? I'll have a look as soon as it finishes uploading.

Installed new drivers last night, allowed it to restart, fired up Photoshop this morning, selected my material, tried to edit the texture by slightly tweaking the color balance, hit save, CRASH.

Opened the stripped down file, followed the exact same process. CRASH.

So, before frustration officially sets in again, any ideas?

At one point I opened up all of the original jpeg textures used in the materials and literally re-created each material one by one. Sure, that worked, but added lots of extra time that I already don't have. Now I see that a couple of them still needs adjusting because they render darker than they appear in preview mode, so I'm trying to just edit the material's texture..... if that would just work.

Since I'm fed up with this whole process now, I've actually just decided to not even try making changes to the materials' textures and if they need tweaked just run a batch after they're all done. So I've just went back to rendering. I need to feel like I'm actually being productive...

If anyone has any ideas at all on how to solve this issue however, I'd be forever grateful.

By the way Daniel, the file is uploaded to my Dropbox now. Not sure what was taking so long last night.

I have the file and a few questions.
  • We can take this offline to further discuss via email but the gist is that file is in a very bad state for a variety of reasons.
  • Did this 3D file come from Blender? Or what is the source of the 3D mesh? It helps to establish a workflow baseline. Every 3D app has pros and cons.
  • There are too many textures (over 600) most of them unused it seems. There should probably be only 5 Materials necessary to render this file
  • Some of the textures, if not all could be reduced in size.
There are ways to repair this file and get it working and performant.

One more idea to consider > Adobe Dimension for this work > here is what I threw together in 5 minutes...

Hi Daniel, thanks for your reply.

I would be happy to continue the conversation through email. What is the best way to proceed?

To answer your questions...

I created the meshes in Maya. I try to keep poly count as low as possible, making sure all is in quads and very clean. As you can probably see, sometimes for speed purposes I do allow meshes to intersect, but all that I've read about says that's ok as long as the mesh is for rendering only.

I'm glad you brought up the issue of the many textures. I can't understand why there appears to be so many. I've tried to replace or remove them, reapply, etc., but they seem to just pile up in my 3D layer. As I eluded to before, I need to create the different materials in order to swap them out on my mesh and render to depict different wood/stain combinations that the eventual user can choose from on the website.

I'm certainly interested in reducing the size of the textures, but my whole issue is getting them to actually save before Photoshop crashes, so at this point I'm afraid to start doing that in fear of losing more time on the project.

As far as using Dimension, it is a very intriguing app for sure, one that I'm inexperienced with. I considered using it in the beginning, but as you may know there is not yet physical lighting capability within the app, and I like to place multiple light sources for rendering. Still, in hindsight I probably would have taken the extra time to learn it more, as it seems to be faster at raytracing.

Also, each part of a given furniture piece needs to be rendered on a transparent background, and separated out. Then I need to quickly batch export each piece as a PNG. So for example, I need the drawers, base and feet of a dresser rendered and saved out separately, AND, perfectly aligned so that the user can switch them out independently.

By the way, nice looking render done there in 5 minutes :).

Thanks,

-Andy

Hi everyone,

I wanted to post here to update whoever might be dealing with 3D issues like this in Photoshop. With Daniel's help, I've been able to clear up 2 issues. But first, in case you haven't read all posts, let me catch you up briefly with what my workflow.

I am rendering multiple furniture pieces that consist of 3 parts: Drawers, Body (which I call a "box") and a Base (which can also be called "feet"). Each of these components must be placed on the canvas so they line up with each other perfectly, so the user can build his/her custom furniture piece by swapping them out individually.

Now, with that overview of my workflow, here were my two issues:

1. The build up of duplicate textures inside Photoshop for 3D meshes when using the Replace Mesh command on a given 3D layer.

2. Alignment of 3D meshes to previously rendered ones.

The two things above really go hand in hand. So at this point, I've found it's best to avoid using Replace Mesh altogether, due to texture duplicating and your file size dramatically growing. Instead, use this workflow to correct both issues listed above:

  1. In your 3D application, create a small cube which is perfectly aligned at the BASE to the origin. This is VERY important for alignment. Assign a unique material to the cube. It can be any type.
  2. Export the cube AND your mesh as a single .obj file with NO GROUPS.
  3. In Photoshop, first create a lights preset from the current 3D layer by selecting Scene, then clicking the hamburger menu at the top right and choosing Save Lights Preset. That way your new imported mesh will match the look of the other. NOTE: A Lights Preset doesn't affect the Environment settings. If you have ground plane reflections or shadows you will have to manually match these.
  4. Use 3D>New 3D Layer From File... to create a new 3D layer
  5. Select the Current View camera in the 3D palette, then in the Properties palette, click the View dropdown menu and match the camera to the previously rendered 3D layer. At this point you should not have to do any further adjusting to see that your mesh lines up perfectly with the previous!
  6. Adjust Environment settings if needed
  7. Before rendering, if the cube isn't hidden, select it and change it's Opacity to 0% so it doesn't render.

That should do it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Here is what the models look like in Maya. For my project there are 6 different drawer designs, but they're always the same dimensions.
