Elements 10: Photomerge stops working before it has produced anything

I have 20 .PNG scanned map files. I try to use the Photomerge Panorama facility. Ideally I would like to stitch together just 4 of the files but the process starts, then having read the 4 files into memory the process just stops and all the files disappear from the program! I have tried it a few times with different selections of files (all PNG type). It nearly always stops working. The program goes back to a blank window screen, the same as if you had just loaded it to start work. The original files are still there. It's as if you had never tried to do the Photomerge.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I have a very powerful PC for editing HD videos, e.g. 16Gb RAM, i5 processor etc.

I am using Photoshop Elements version 10. Sorry, I am new to this site and accidentally did not follow the convention of putting the application name in the thread title.
