Lightroom: photo goes grainy in preview when gradient applied

I have one particular B+W preset that when applied to a photo which then subsequently has an exposure gradient applied the photo will appear extremely grainy in preview. When zoomed to 1:3 or above the graininess disappears.

The graininess is not apparent in any output photo, only in preview at magnifications of 1:3 or less.

The graininess does not occur if exposure is set at 0 or any other gradient sliders are used.
