Does the whole computer freeze (so even CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work), or does just Photoshop freeze?

A system hang or freeze requiring a computer restart usually means a low level failure such as a driver (video card driver, etc), failing/damage hard disk, damaged OS installation, or failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc).

Easiest thing to check for is a bad video driver.

Determine what video card you have and go *directly to the manufacturers website (nVidia or ATI/AMD)* and download the latest driver: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...

Just doing Windows Update won't give you the latest and greatest drivers. You must go directly to your card manufacturers website to check for driver updates.

The most common causes of hardware/system faults like this: bad RAM (probably 80% of cases), bad hard disks, bad video card (not likely in this case), bad motherboards, bad power supplies, and bugs in driver software (video, disk, printer, mouse, etc.). Bad CPUs can also cause it, but aren't that common right now (this tends to happen in bad batches - so many people see the same problem at the same time).
