batch DNG conversion in Lightroom gets slower and slower

I've been trying to convert 42,000 NEF raw files to DNG in LR 4.4. Things start off well....each one takes about 4 seconds to convert. But performance gets worse and worse; by the time it's done ~2000, it's taking 8 secs an image, and so on.

I set up the 42,000 to convert last weekend, working out that it should have converted about 21,000 a day, thus completing the job in two days. But coming in Monday morning (2.5 days after starting), it had only done ~8000, and each image was taking longer than 30 seconds each to convert.

I've tried this on two separate machines (quad core Mac Pro 1,1 running OSX 10.7, and octo-core Mac Pro 4,1 running OSX 10.8), and on my Macbook Air (OSX 10.8), with the same characteristic slowdown. I've also tried it from an external HD and an internal SATA drive...same problem.

Quitting and restarting LR fixes the problem, but it's going to take a lot of restarts to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time.

The RAW files come from a variety of Nikon cameras: from a D70, D200, D700, D7100, and D800.

Is this a sign of a memory leak?
