Edit -> Perspective works awesome with shapes. But for text layers, perspective and distort options are disabled. I know in after effects we can distort text's shape without rasterizing and converting to shape.

Normal text layers just can be skewable with holding Ctrl and click and drag from corners of bounding box.

P.S: Converting text to smart object is a way for this but smart objects might be heavier.

If by »heavier« you mean that it would increase the file-size you are correct.
Still I consider it a fair work-around, especially as I wonder how Photoshop should handle the perspective when the width or height change due to subsequent editing of the text – what would be your preferences in that regard?

This doesn't exactly do what you want and preserve the text editability - but I thought I'd point out that 3D>New 3D Postcard from Layer or 3d>Repousse>Text Layer...which opens up some other perspective 3D effects if you have Photoshop Extended.
