Using the pen tool, I can't seem to exclude areas inside of a selection. If I choose the "combine Shapes" and make a circle, then choose "subtract from Shape" it will give me the "Subtract from shape" as a selection. Also I can not use the "Exclude Overlapping Shapes" This seems like it should be very easily, is there a bug in Photoshop CC?

Hi Steven,

The intersection options work like this:

-If there are no subpaths currently selected (anchor points visible), the intersection option you choose will apply to the next subpath you draw.

-If there is one or more subpath currently selected (anchor points visible), the intersection option you choose will apply to the currently selected subpath(s).

Right after you draw a path, it is automatically selected. So if you follow the steps you described above (Choose combine shapes, draw path, choose subtract from shape), you will end up subtracting the shape you just drew.

If you are trying to cut out one shape from another, you can try the following:
1. Choose Combine Shapes.
2. Draw the first shape.
3. Draw the second shape.
4. Choose Subtract from Shape.

Or, you can use keyboard shortcuts while drawing:
1. Hold down Shift and draw the first shape.
2. Hold down Option/Alt and draw the second shape.

Let me know if this doesn't solve your problem.

Hi Jeanne,
You explained how the pen works in previous versions on PS. In my version of CC, if I make a circle there are anchor points, then if draw a second circle and make a selection, only the second circle become a selection. If I create a circle and them choose subtract from shape, then draw a circle in the middle, only the middle circle becomes a selection. Is this a bug or am I missing something with CC?
