Photoshop Elements: Unable to select shape presets after moving the 'Custom shape picker' window (PSE 10/Mac 10.7)

With Mac OS Lion 10.7.3 and iMac 2011 using Photoshop Elements version 10(20110831.m.17215) selecting a saved shape from the list of 'Custom shapes' in the 'picker' produces a grayed list of none selectable custom shapes after moving or enlarging the 'Custom shape's picker frame'.

Associated observations are that the 'Custom shape picker' frame has a behaviour of lying outside, below and to the left, of the PE window origin after reducing or moving the size of the main PE window. This behaviour encourages the movement of the resulting 'Custom shape frame', at least by this user, with a subsequent loss of the custom shape list facilities.

It appears that closing the 'Custom shape picker frame' and then reselecting the 'picker' reactivates the list of custom shapes and allows selection from the list as long as the frame origin is not altered. The slightest movement of the 'Custom shape picker' frame away from its' origin is sufficient to trigger a gray list.

Obviously this is a temporary fix to an issue that requires a more permanent solution. Any action regarding a permanent fix would be appreciated.

Thanks.

HI Tony,

Thanks for the reporting the issue. This issue was with PSE 10. I think we have a workaround to fix this problem(Just don't move the flyout) , so we can live with it. A more permanent solution would be too make the flyout unmovable like we have for the pattern picker flyout.

Regards,
Sanchit

I can't reproduce this problem, either I need more details or there it's an issue specific to Lion (I'm using 10.6.8). If that's the case, it could be a security thing because there were a number of changes in Lion in this area.

INITIAL OBSERVATIONS:

Using iMac 3.4GHz 12GB RAM, OS 10.7.3 Build 11D50, HD 6970M 1024MB.

The issue described in the original post is demonstrable on my iMac without additional plugins, added brushes or other 3rd party add-ons for PE.

Further, I note inconsistencies with expected 'Custom shape' behaviour and that of 'Brushes' and 'Styles' options within the same PE10. The latter two behave as expected and suggest display coding for 'Custom shapes' may be the target for subsequent investigation.

The main observational differences from the above examples being the variable location of the 'Custom shapes' frame and visibility of list items on the screen.

Within PE 10 moving a 'Brushes' frame produces expected behaviour and there is an observable difference in that a drop down list is centered on the frame. Apart from obvious differences in list content and displayed functions the 'Custom shapes' list is positioned to the right hand side.

The following observations apply to PE 10 using full or reduced size screen mode.
With full screen mode the observed difference is in the location of the 'Custom shape' frame. (See observation (d) below).

MY ACTIONS:

1: Reduce the size of the main PE window and move it right on the screen.
2: Select Custom shape tool.
3: Select 'Shape'.
4: Resize frame.
5: Move frame elsewhere on the screen.
6: Activate list of custom shapes using >> at top right of frame.
7: The list of custom shapes is grey and displayed to the right of the frame.

REMEDIAL ACTION:
8: Close the 'Custom shape' frame.
9: Reopen the 'Custom shape' frame.

SUBSEQUENT OBSERVATIONS after action 8:

a) Various shapes from a list is selectable (i.e not greyed out).

b) The 'Custom shape' frame does not remain in the position in which it was closed. It is positioned below and beyond the extreme left of the main PE window location origin.

c) The 'Custom shape' frame does retain the customised size settings from resizing action 4 above.

d) With a full screen PE window any displacement of the 'Custom shape' frame is up to the left hand limit of the screen.

My interpretation is that these behavioural differences indicate a potential root cause in the loss of parameters for frames that are not at a specified absolute location.

As a recently new purchase I am in unfamiliar territory. Are there other selection procedures similar to those used by 'Custom shapes' for me to quickly test ?

Thanks for the update, now I'm starting to see the behavior with the extra details. However, I'm not seeing it exactly as you do. For me, once the list is greyed out, all of the items are greyed out. If I close and reopen the window (without moving it) all of the items are available again. But it is a start. I'll pass this on the the engineering team to see what we can do to fix it.
