Photoshop: Paragraph styles inconsistent and unusable due to bad design

First of all, I will not mention the tedious performance of the paragraph style implementation mentioned in the other thread. This continues to be a huge problem for me and there was no further assistance from the Photoshop staff provided.

The whole feature seems to be designed without attention to usability. The following features make the paragraph styles unusable:

If you define a paragraph style, change it and select redefine style, nothing changes automatically in the document. You need to select the text, notice the + and say Clear Overrides. BUT that is not all. You need to actually select each and every letter of the paragraph and select clear overrides to apply the redefined style. This way paragraph styles in Photoshop act as character styles and completely break the logic behind the division of the two types of styles.

Another bad feature is that if you scale a text box with formatted text, the paragraph style gets scaled too. This results in inconsistent appearance of text with no way to reverse it. The property input fields show the same value as the paragraph style definition but the text is obviously not the same. I am not aware of a possibility to solve this with the current interface. There is no option to reset object transformations nor to automatically force the right visual appearance of text in all text boxes, scaled or not.

Last but not least, paragraph and character style definition cannot be part of the Photoshop styles (neither can vector stroke and fill options, which is even more bewildering) , making the whole feature even more inconsistent and unnecessarily complicated in any real world scenario.

InDesign makes all things right in this department. Illustrator has the same problem with auto updating styles but at least the logical division between paragraph and character styles is correctly implemented.

Correct me if I am missing something but given the inconsistencies across the new vector and text features I am getting the feeling that the cs6 update was more than rushed.

A few corrections: Layer Styles (Layer Effects) are a completely different concept from text styles, and really cannot be mixed with text styles. Vector fills and strokes are similarly unrelated concepts, and cannot be mixed with text styles or layer styles.

At some high level, all 3 "styles" specify the appearance of something - but so does every operation in Photoshop.

From a human perspective it would be nice if the program would understand a visual appearance of a let's say headline with layer effects and text attributes as one logical entity (Red headline of 44pt, Calibri with inner shadow on it). Or a vector as stroke and fill and layer effects, let's say on a vector button.

Fireworks can do this and as such is the only alternative for quick and consistent screen design (but again there is the "Not enough memory" legendary bug, which renders the whole application unusable since years).

Convenience and consistency are the only reasons to use a style. Having to use two different styles in two different panels leaves a lot of room for improvement. And I believe that having the ability to save the appearance of text or a vector without the need to save at least two styles is an advantage for anyone using this program. I highly doubt that this is only a problem for me. :D

Nevertheless, that was not the point of the post. The paragraph styles are the problem. It would be great if you could forward it to the people who actually develop these features.

No, I'm not going to touch the text styles mess. The text team needs to address those problems.

Is there a way to submit a feature request to the Photoshop team, because the feature request form is available for all programs but Photoshop.

So get someone from the text team to look at it, please.
