Lightroom Desktop: Organizing photos without known capture date

I generally organize photos by capture date, as I imagine many do. I have hundreds of photos that were scanned from prints or negatives for which the capture date is unknown. Lightroom CC doesn't appear to allow one to make the date ambiguous - 199x-xx-xx. What is a good way to handle those photos? (they all seem to have acquired the date when the photos were scanned, although they span decades)

The easiest solution is to use a special file name convention and use that to organise the images.

Thank you, but doesn't that force you to organize all photos by name? Which I suppose is indeed an option. However, for not desirable, at least to me, for the tens of thousands of photos with a capture date.

If you know the date the original negative or slide was shot you can change the capture date.

1) In the Library module select a group of scan files with the same original shot time.
2) Go to menu Metadata> 'Edit Capture Time' and select 'Adjust to a specified date and time.'
3) Enter the date in the 'Corrected Time' field.

I usually let it be 0 which is 19040101? (can't remember exactly, but it is the start of last century).

I've been using 1 minute past midnight on the first of the month, first of the year, first of the decade etc. for anything fuzzy. The Capture Time to Exif plug-in is idea when you want to set them all to the same date/time. http://www.beardsworth.co.uk/lightroom/capture-time-to-exif/
