What order does it then use?

Usually, the order of file names and capture times are equal, but there are exceptions, for example when you go from file number 9999 to 0001, or if you move to another timezone with a camera with built-in GPS and auto adjustment of clock.

And what do you exactly mean by download? Is it the order in which the photos are imported from the card, or is it the order in which the photos are shown in the film strip?

And what is your film strip sort order setting?

the film strip was set to added order. I reset to capture time but that did not change order of photos.
when I download from the card, the photos appear in random order. i.e. I have photo 73 82 90 75 83 84 85 70 76 71
I also have photos from my canon camera in the lightroom catalogue. the sony pics download into the sequence mid way, not at the end of the sequence like my canon photos do.
your suggestion is good to check the time setting on my new camera. I will make sure it is correct.
