I have Photoshop CS5.1 on a Windows PC and am unable to open a .psd file that I suspect was made on a Mac. How can I open it?

PSD files should be compatible across versions and platforms. What error or warning do you get when you open the file? Is the file missing it's extension? (.psd)

An example of the file names include: "._actin.psd" - I also successfully renamed it as "actin.psd" and it still didn't open in Photoshop but game me the error message: "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document".

How are you opening the file? If you choose File>Open.... and make sure "Photoshop" is selected, will the file open?

Is it possible to post the file somewhere (dropbox or YouSendIt) so we can do some troubleshooting?

Yes "Photoshop" was selected as well as "all files" format and both gave the same error message. I have posted a file to Dropbox. What do you need to access.

Make sure the directory has public access and post a URL.

You copied the resource fork (aka metadata) for the file, not the file contents. You need to open actin.psd not .actin or ._actin or %actin or anything other than the file itself. Normally you don't even see the files that have a filename starting with a .
