I took raw images on my Nikon D7200; downloaded the dng converter; converted a nef file to a dng file, but my Photoshop Elements 9 won't open it. Simply get a non responding message. Elements 9 has Camera Raw 6.1. Is it possible to open the dng file in Elements 9?

The DNGconverter does not work on individual files, you have to select a whole folder (not any of its files) to convert them in batch to the DNG raw format. The resulting converted files should open ok in your PSE9.

Did you make sure you set the compatibility correctly? You need to set it to be compatible with Camera Raw 6.1, so to "Camera Raw 5.4 and later".

Thanks for responding.

Johan, I did set it at Camera Raw 5.4 and later; Michel, I did select a folder. It is converting to DNG files, but PSE9 won't open them. Just get message  "PSE not responding."  Note - PSE9 is opening JPEGs fine.

Another idea:

I don't use Nikon cameras, but it's a known fact that there was a Nikon bug which corrupted NEF files after conversion with an older Nikon transfer software.  If you think that may have been the case, I am sure you'll get help about this from other Nikon users in this forum.

The "Not Responding" message may be that the program is hung and waiting on the operating system for memory allocation that might eventually be satisfied.  The typical message when the CR plug-in doesn't recognize a raw is it immediately says something about the file format not recognized.  "Not Responding" is a system message when you click on an application that doesn't have a user-input thread listening for keys and clicks.

If you wait several minutes does the raw file open?  Have you tried it after a fresh reboot without Organizer or anything else running.  Open the PSE Editor and use File / Open to open one DNG.

SUCCESS!!!.  Thanks. I waited about a minute or so and the file opened. The next file I tried opened in 3-4 seconds.  I've never experienced that before. Thanks again.

PSE7 being old can mess up.  You might try looking for a nice (full) Photoshop-6.0 (or better) that has a RAW converter built in.   You won't have a problem with converting single files, no batch converting.  No need for a later version.  Those who have it get a later version then sell 6.0.
