LIGHTROOM 4 My images are disappearing and there's no "?".

I'm panicking! Some of my files now say there are 0 images! There isn't a question mark so they don't seem to be misplaced - just gone! Some folders seem smaller than they should be and some are greyed out with 0 images. I think I've lost my son's first steps! Can somebody please help me?

You've unchecked your Show Photos in Subfolders option under Library: Library is probably all that's happened.

Is it possible that my Lightroom was corrupted somehow and images will start disappearing?

How sure are you that the images do not exist anywhere on your hard disks?

Pretty sure... I have Time Machine which I believe schedules my external hard drive to back up my photos regularly. I also have a secondary back-up that I do every now and again. It's almost like files went missing and I keep backing up the new version (that was missing files).

If the images used to be in LR and used to be on the hard-drive, but now the images do no exist in LR and do not exist in your hard-drive, that suggests that LR was used to delete them, or an external process was used to move or remove them and then LR was synchronized and automatically deleted them from the catalog.

LR doesn't magically delete things both from itself and from the hard-drive, but if you had everything selected, and didn't realize it, and then clicked/pressed Delete and confirmed Delete from Disk then LR would have dutifully removed everything selected from the catalog and deleted the photos from the disk as well.

Have you looked in Time Machine and can you find the photos, there? How long ago do you feel the photos were in LR and on your HD?

Could the photos have been moved into your 2012 set, which is a lot larger than the other folders.

Have you done a hard-drive search outside of LR for one of the filenames to make sure it hasn't just been moved somewhere else?

It's so sporadic with what's missing! It's not every file in a row but some here and there. Some files are just noticably smaller but not yet empty...

I went to Italy in 2012 - that's why there's a crazy amount of photos in that year... it was a photography tour so a huge amount of images.

I looked in iPhoto that I used previous to LR and there are still 1000's of photos there. I don't know why they don't show up in Finder, Pictures... I'll see if I can back all those up on a new drive tomorrow. At least I can see them.

I still have no idea why the images started disappearing out of LR. I'm nervous that it will continue...
