Photoshop: Using the Selection tools is not functioning correctly

When opening older PS files in PS CS5, I cannot select objects. I'm on the correct layer, I can move objects (Click and drag), but I cannot select objects (click without drag) to copy or paste to other layers.

Do you have Auto-Select turned on in the Move Tool options bar?:

I can do all "MOVE" functions. The functions within the "selection tool" option are the features that don't work.

I'm not quite following what's going wrong. So, if you have a selection tool, like the Marquee Tool. Do you click and drag to create a marquee selection and nothing happens?

The Direct Selection Tool is the tool I am trying to use, it won't let me click on anything or select anything.

Are you using the Direct Selection PATH Tool (3/4 the way down the toolbar) or the Move Tool (top of the toolbar)?

The Direct Selection Tool is for paths, and only works with paths.

For selecting layers and other items, you should be using the Move Tool.

To me, a selection tool is the lasso, marquee, magic wand, and the pen tool once a path is completed allows you to make a selection (marching ants). As mentioned before the direct selection tool is for activating a path to adjust the points and handles.

Everyone's suggestions were helpful. I was finally able to do the selections once I verified that all of the options you suggested were correct.
