Photoshop: Non destructive CMYK layer effect

I would like to see a non-destructive layer created for CMYK screen proofing and printing to RIPs. Currently I have to convert the entire document mode to CMYK. It causes me to still have to save two different psd files, original RGB (in case I need to return and edit) and print version of CMYK. If there were a special CMYK layer effect that I can designate for printing that would be great.

In Photoshop, just use the Proof Preview.

You can't change the mode of the document by an adjustment or effect, only by changing the mode of the document.
