Photoshop Elements: No small thumbnails in PSE 10 organizer

I have just bought a new laptop running Windows 7. When I installed Photoshop Elements 10, the Organiser only displays thumbnails when there are six or fewer on the screen. If I try to look at more smaller thumbnails I just get grey squares with hourglasses. Increasing the size brings the pictures back, reducing it goes back to grey boxes. This did not happen on my old PC running Vista. Any ideas?

Hi Roger,
It may be possible that your thumbnail database got corrupted somehow. Please to re-build you thumbnail database.
For doing so, please navigate to your catalog folder (path of current catalog is mentioned in 'Help->system info->Current catalog'). You will find a file saying 'thumb.5.cache'. Please rename this file (say to thumbs.5.cache_old). Now launch Organizer and wait for thumbnail generation to complete. Once done, please let me know if you still face this issue.

Hi Andromeda, Thanks for your response. I realise now that the problem is that my catalog is so large, as I built it over a long period on my previous computer, that Elements has not yet completed the thumbnail database! It does say "generating thumbnails" at the bottom. Do I need to leave the computer on continuously until it finishes, or can it carry on each time I restart? I have had it on for several hours at a time, but not long enough, presumably! I proved that you are right by adding a new, small test catalog and the thumbnails work fine in that.

Hi Roger,

Thumbnail generation process can continue across the launches. That is if thumbnail generation is not complete and your restart your system/Organizer then it will continue for the remaining images.
My recommendation will be to leave your system ON for the night with Organizer launched so that Organizer can complete the thumbnail generation over night.

I have reset my thumbnail database and can now see thumbnails!
Thanks very much for your advice - I now have a better understanding.
