"No photo selected message" received when going from the Library module to the Develop module. Also no photos showing in the filmstrip.

In library, is it a folder or collection that you have selected (in the left panels)?
Do you have one image selected, or multiple images when you go into Develop?

Which OS are you using? And which version of Lightroom?

I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), and the LR4 version released yesterday. I had been using LR4 Beta without any issues. The issue is when I am in one of my folders, and when I have one photo selected in Grid view or in Loupe view.

I temporarily resolved the issue by removing the Preferences files from my Library, relaunching LR4, and then re-importing my catalog. However, when I imported another older catalog, this same issue arose in that catalog.

I had this exact same problem. Same OS, same LR4 beta without problems, same behavior: one or multiple photos selected in the Library module, I hit "D" to go into Develop and it told me there were no photos selected. Fortunately restarting Lightroom fixed it for me, but I'm concerned that this may be a real bug that will keep coming up. For the sake of my workflow I would really like that not to be the case. :)

Jon, if you see the problem again, please post back.

Mark, I'm going to contact you privately to get a copy of your catalog.

Steven, I have a few troubleshooting things I'd like you to try.

1. When you go to Develop, do you see a blank filmstrip like Mark described?
2. Does the problem happen regardless of which folder or collection you have selected in Library?
3. If you import a new set of photos (that weren't in the original LR3 catalog), does the problem happen with those?
4. Do you use stacks in library? If so, can you locate (or import) a folder that has no stacks, and see if the problem still happens?
5. If you export a portion of the catalog (a collection or folder, perhaps), then open the exported catalog, does the problem still happen?

Thanks,
Becky

Filmstrip does not display any images.. Also, photo specifically imported into LR4 selected in Library will not open in develop module.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Lightroom 4: filmstrip does not display images.

If you restart Lightroom, does this problem go away permanently? Sounds like an issue that was identified where images aren't visible or selectable immediately after a catalog upgrade. A restart of Lightroom has been found to correct this problem.

This also happened to me. I'm on a Mac using the most recent version of Snow Leopard. I also had no issues with LR4 Beta and I've been using LR for a few years now.

I didn't have the issue until I imported a couple different catalogs and then I wasn't able to "develop." I tried hitting "D" and right-clicking. I tried opening photos (one at a time) imported from my old LR3 catalog as well as the LR4 Beta catalog with the same result: "No photo selected." I also see nothing in the film strip.

I restarted and now I'm able to get into the Develop module. I plan to import/consolidate a couple other old catalogs tonight and I'll report back.

Thanks. If restart does correct this, then this is likely the issue I'm thinking of that should be addressed a forthcoming update of Lightroom.

If anyone sees this problem again, check to see if your "Used" filter has been applied. If you are unsure, set your filter to "Unused" and then refilter the images using your normal criteria.

I had this problem before in 4.1RC and it persists in the official version 4.1. I'm on a Mac with 10.6.8. If I quit LR and restart, I can now select a photo in library grid and press D to actually edit in Develop mode. Like others have said, this only affects new catalogs after a fresh import.

Are you trying to switch from a Publish Service directly to Develop?

No, not switching from a Publish Service to Develop. All I'm doing is creating a new catalog, importing images, and then trying to work on one or many. I get the "No photo selected" message. Only quitting and relaunching lets me Develop. Previously saved catalogs will allow me to develop selected images.

Upgraded from LR2... initial catalog had same problem. Selected image in Library, pressed D -- "No photo Selected" blank screen in Develop module. Restarted LR and it worked.

I'm having a similar issue but I'm not told that no image is selected. Restarting doesn't help. Reinstalling doesn't help.

"1. When you go to Develop, do you see a blank filmstrip like Mark described?" No. The photos appear in the filmstrip.
"2. Does the problem happen regardless of which folder or collection you have selected in Library?" Yes.
"3. If you import a new set of photos (that weren't in the original LR3 catalog), does the problem happen with those?" Yes.
"4. Do you use stacks in library?" No.
"5. If you export a portion of the catalog (a collection or folder, perhaps), then open the exported catalog, does the problem still happen?" Yes.

Any help would be appreciated.

If anyone can tell me why this was marked as solved it would be appreciated.  None of the comments appear to offer a working solution.

I was working in LR Classic (current as of 1/26/2020) -  all good.  Did some stuff in another and went back.  Collections panel on left report x photos in each Collection.  But when I click on one LR reports “no photos in selected collection”.  That’s pretty terrible.  Far more terrible is that THE SAME THING HAPPENS when I launch a backup of that Catalog (but not other catalogs).  I've restarted, restarted from a backup drive, launched a backup collection and it happens very time. I'm in panic mode - all my work (a book I've been doing for months) is gone.  Adobe phone is close and there's an infinite loop of nothing trying to find support email or chat.

What happens if you go back further in your backups, to before you last works on the book? The most likely cause is using synchronize folder to fix missing photos.

Thanks, but the photos aren't actually missing.  They're in "All Photos" and open fine.  But the Collections report as empty and the book contents (text, layout, etc) are gone.  I've worked on the Book every day for weeks (final push).  It's ALL the Collections in this Catalog,
Just too weird.

No, but they may have been in the past. We hear from lots of people who have tried to fix photos that are marked as missing by using Synchronize Folder. That removes the missing photos from the catalog (and thereby their collections) and then adds them back into the catalog as new photos. All collections being empty would also fit with that happening to a larger number, perhaps because a driver letter changes. That would fit with what you're describing, but of course it's not the only possibility, hence asking if your older backups...
