Why can't I open a Raw file from Lightroom into Photoshop in TIFF or PSD when that format has been selected in the Prefererences panel under "Edit in Photoshop CS 5.1"? I can only open Camera Raw files with Lightroom adjustments. There isn't any dialog box that gives me the option to open either a copy, original or with lightroom adjustments.

When you "Edit in ...." on a raw file, the file is rendered using ACR and passed to Photoshop, where it (a little confusingly) appears with the original raw extension. However, as soon as you select "Save" in Photoshop you will see the file extension change to reflect either Tif or PSD as per your preferences, and the edited Tif/PSD will be passed back to Lightroom and stacked with the original. Depending on your starting position, you may or may not immediately see the stacked file.

The "open original, copy, or copy with LR adjustments" dialogue only appears when using a rendered file (e.g. if you take the first Tif/PSD back into Photoshop you would get this dialog).

Thanks, Jim. What I can't understand is why the Preferences panel has an option to select either PSD of TIFF under Edit in Photoshop. Why give this option if you can't open the ACR in one of these formats.

Thanks again for responding.

It sets the format of the file-type you want returned to LR from your "Edit in..." operation. You actually ARE opening into that format, even though the filename extension doesn't actually change initially.

Thanks again for your response, Jim. Now, I know what the Preferences panel dialog box is used for.
