Nikon D850 raw files don't open

I'm using Photoshop CC6 and just got a Nikon D850. The raw files won't open in Photoshop or Lightroom, but all works fine with my old D700. I read about downloading a plug-in called "camera raw" but the info is rather confusing. Any tips or a link to a good webpage would be much appreciated.

You'll likely need to either update to a newer version of ACR that natively supports that newer camera OR convert to DNG which can be done for free using Adobe's DNG converter.

thanks. Do you know if there is any loss of quality when converting the raw files?

Not if you use the correct settings (Lossless). The raw will be just as raw in the DNG. You will lose proprietary metadata to some degree meaning that if you ever decide to go back to using Nikon's software, or a raw converter that doesn't support DNG, you'll want to backup the original, proprietary raws.
What's happening is every new proprietary raw is slightly different from the last. You're using an old version of PS and thus ACR. Newer versions would support your camera natively. If you don't wish to pay to upgrade PS/ACR, converting to DNG will allow you to use the older software at no cost in terms of money.
The proprietary raw metadata IS stored in the DNG but again, if you attempt to use a product that doesn't support DNG (and all should, that's a different story), then you'll want the original camera raws.
