What version of Lightroom are you using? Support for that camera was added in Lightroom 5.6 or later.

If you are up to date, are you importing the images directly into Lightroom or are you using Nikon's software to import the files to your computer? If you shoot a new image and import into Lightroom directly, do the files import correctly?

If money matters, LR6 is probably coming out in the next few months so if you can use DNGs until then, you can save the cost of buying LR5, now, and then a LR6 upgrade in the near future, and just buy LR6 in a little while and have what extra features it brings to the table.

You can use the free DNG Converter to create DNGs from your NEFs. Those DNGs will open in LR 4.4. You can get it from here:
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/

Or consider signing up for the CC Photography Plan for US$10/month and get access to whatever the current versions of LR and PS are for as long as your subscription is current.
