I just updated to LR5 but the smart previews portion can't be found. The rest of the new features downloaded but the smart previews seem to be missing

You have to have Lightroom build them, they're not created automatically when you upgrade a catalog.

You can create Smart Previews during Import, or you can create them in the same way as you might create other previews: Library>Previews>Build Smart Previews. You will have the option to build All or just for the selected photo(s).

Thanks jim for responding. I understand that, but the buttons ect are missing in order to do that. I watched Jullianne Kosts video and know where they are located , including going to the tool bar , but the whole smart preview update is missing

Liz, could you point me at the Julieanne video? I'm not aware of any "buttons" on the toolbar, which can be used to build smart previews. During normal Lightroom operation, the only places that Smart Previews can be generated from are:

1. In the Library module, choosing Library menu > Previews > Build Smart Previews.

2. During import, by checking the "Build Smart Previews" checkbox in the File Handling panel.

There is no separate "smart previews update", the functionality is built into LR5 as standard.

Perhaps we are having a terminology problem?

Hi Again, I figured it out. I still had LR4 opening up. I hadn't put the new icon on the bottom tool bar. Here is the url anyway. It tells all about the new LR% features. Out of curiosity, Do you know how to move the entire catalog, including previews ect, from one external hard drive to ANOTHER external hard drive? Any scoop would be helpful as I forgot how i transferred everything from my iMac to my exhdrive in the first place. Liz

OK, glad it's sorted.

Regarding your question about moving from one drive to another, If you really mean ONLY the catalog and previews, then you can simply copy the catalog folder to the other drive, then double-click on the catalog file on the new drive to launch Lightroom with the catalog in its new location. Then adjust your startup options on the Preferences>General Tab to ensure Lightroom continues to use the newly located catalog.

However, if the question is a bit more complicated that it initially sounds, probably better to post it in one of the user help forums, as I'm not sure this is the correct forum to use. Suggest either the Adobe Community Forum:

Or one of the independent forums such as Victoria's:
