I'd like a button in the develop module that compares the (EXIF) exposures of a number of selected photos and calculates the needed exposure adjustment/compensation to make them all equally exposed.

It's already there - match total exposures. Settings menu in the Develop module, Photo-Develop Settings in Library, or control-alt-shift-M.

Whoa, thanks! This program always keeps pulling out new tricks out if its sleeves.

match total exposures seems to operate on the metadata only (iso, exposure value, etc.)
I'd like to crop a selected area (such as a gray card) and then have it raise/lower the average brightness etc to make the images similar. I thought auto tone would do this but it seems to be doing more and the images come out quite different

Right - match uses the EXIF data as input. It doesn't analyze the image data.

Analyzing the image data is a way more difficult problem, especially since you don't know which part of the tone curve you'd like to match, especially if the images have different content.
