Elements 14: Type tool locking up the program

I recently downloaded and installed PS 14. I have many years experience with this wonderful program. When I click on the "Type Too" the program totally locks up. This has happened several times. I have to shut down using Task Manager. I am on Sat. Internet with Dish and the download took nearly four hours. Is there any way I can receive installation disks to insure proper "clean" installation?

I would probably try some troubleshooting for fonts prior to trying a reinstall: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/...

Hi Paul,

It does sound like you have a corrupted font cache.  That is usually caused by a corrupt system font cache, though PS could be the culprit too.

I would follow Jeff's suggestions to clear your font caches -- make sure you do both your system AND Adobe's.  What OS are you running?

If that doesn't solve your problem, ping me here and I'll see what I can do to troubleshoot for you.

Thanks,
David

I downloaded both the PDF and the test. I read the PDF carefully and embedded the test in the script file and when I launched PSE 14 I looked for the file under help where the PDF said a "font test" would be. There is no font test listed . I may be wrong but you all have used CS6 as your reference for this process and should I assume that PSE 14 is what you are talking about?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Type tool is dysfunctional!!.

I continue to have problems with Elements 14 and the "Type" aspect of this application! Each time I attempt to click on it the whole program locks up. I attempted a fix offered by the "Team" but to no avail! I cannot use the program as it is . The "Team" provided a solution that requires the font cache to be dumped but the suggested process could not be applied. I will have to ask for a refund if this cannot be resolved soon!

I am having the same problem with the type tool locking up my entire laptop. I have to go into the task manager to shut down PSE14. I'm running Win 10 and have all updates installed. This is very frustrating....

I recently purchased Photoshop Elements 14 and have the same problem. When clicking the Type Tool, my computer freezes up. I read some of the earlier suggestions, like "clear your font caches". I don't even know what a font cache is, let alone knowing how to clear it. Surely, Adobe technicians must know how to solve this? Can anybody help a "non-technical user"?

I am also having a problem with the editor locking up.  It has happened repeatedly.  I have two separate copies of Elements 14 and both computers lock up.  The one computer is running windows 10, and the other is running windows 7 professional.  How do I get help for this problem.

There are so many complaints about version 14. If Adobe doesn't do a satisfactory update while 14 is current, I am in hopes that they will give version 15 to owners of version 14. It feels like we are being used for testing the program at our expense.

I am getting frustrated. No solutions to the Type Tool freeze presented. Is it not possible to ask Adobe technicians directly? Surely they would know how to solve this.

Hi Gerrit,

I don't work on Elements, but rather Photoshop.  In my experience, when the Type tool has issues such as this, it's not the application that's having a problem, but rather one (or more) fonts that are having a problem and/or the font cache that's gone bad.  Try the steps found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html to clear the issue (you'll have to adjust the file locations -- this document is written for Photoshop).  Another idea would be to limit the number of fonts you have installed at a time -- each one eats resources, so if you don't need 'em, why let 'em drag you down?  Fonts downloaded for free off the Internet should be the first to go as you generally get the quality you pay for (in other words, such fonts are notoriously buggy).

If all that doesn't help, ping me and I'll try to figure out something that does.  We could even try a web-hosted screenshare, though I confess (again) my specialty is Photoshop, not Photoshop Elements.  But, Type is also my area, so I should be able to help.

Have a nice weekend,
David

Thank you, David. I tried most of your suggestions. No luck. I uninstalled and re-installed Elements 14. Again, no luck. Till recently I used Photoshop CC (subscription). I didn't need this full program anymore, so I bought Elements 14. I may have to go back to the pro photoshop CC.
