Photoshop: Face Aware Liquify doesn't find faces in some cases

With the new face detection, which is really great and fast tool to use, I have a lot of picture with the model reclining and the face is not detected automatically, is there a way to force the detection? In the end I rotated the picture 90 deg and worked on the face, with no problem.

In the image Kedar Baht provided, I was able to determine the man's head wear is the reason the face is not detected. I did some testing where I merged the provided image with an image of a face without head wear, masking out only the head wear to reveal a forehead. The man's face could then be detected and manipulated, then masked back into the original image. (Note: the face-detection also had difficulty determining the center of the very squinted eye.)

In the current implementation, our face-detection can recognize faces to about 30o rotation.  The suggested workaround is to temporarily rotate the image. Please let us know if the failure is occurring on faces with less than 30o rotation.

Additionally, the face-detection technology is not always able to recognize faces partially obscured by hats or head wear, extreme lighting, or face-paint etc.

We are interested in seeing the images where face-detection isn't successful so we can make improvements to the algorithm in the future.

Thank you,
Meredith

Here's the original image, which doesn't work with Face Aware Liquify either.

I wish Adobe would just enable manual identification of faces when auto-detection doesn’t work. It’s been about a year and there’s no progress on a fix :-(

I agree. On1 has a face detection algorithm that does allow us to manually select the face and reshape the paths for eyes and mouth. But On1 is editing for tone, color, and smoothing, which is much easier to mask for.

I'm guessing that there's more to it when the entire face structure gets modified with one slider or another — so if the face is in strong profile or strongly tilted in any direction, how does the slider affect the underlying structure so what would normally make a smile from a mouth head on can do that with a mouth on a slant? Or half a mouth? I think it's possible for them to figure it out, but maybe it's taking this long because they don't have  one person assigned to it full time, and there's a lot of if-then stuff that has to go on under the hood to tell the sliders what to operate on and by how much.

They could have us use something like the On1 method to locate the edges of the features (don't forget it includes nose, jawline, distances of features from other features, and their shapes), but programming the sliders does sound like it could be very complicated.

But for more simple issues like the one right below, where the program can't tell eyes from glasses, or the downward tilt, or maybe the beard, (and I know it has problems with hats, too), I'd be thrilled with a hybrid between On1 and the auto recognition we have now, even if they can't solve all the problems.

I do hope they're working on it, anyway. It's a great convenience not to have to use the other tools to make the alterations. I'm not expecting much anytime soon, though, since I very much doubt they assign one such project per person, but I'm always hopeful.<G>

The attached face is not recognized. Would it be possible to enable manual facial control points when auto face detection doesn't recognize a face?

That's why it would be good to be able to manually identify control points when auto fails.

Also would it be possible using the red eye detection technology, be able to move the pupils left and right, rather than with liquefy only being able to move the whole eye? Do not get many models, who are cross eyed, but something like this would really help !

I don't have experience with face-liquefy, and this is not ideal, but this last woman's face is detected if you rotate it to make the eyes level...draw between the center of the eyes with the ruler and select Image Rotate Arbitrary (14-some degrees).

This has been addressed in the latest release of Photoshop, which became available this morning. I tested one of the images in this set and face-aware had no trouble detecting the face in the image. Please try it out!

Thanks,

Unfortunately you didn't test it on the face I posted :-(
Again, would it be possible to enable manual facial control points when auto face detection doesn't recognize a face?

Hi Gordo,

I tested your image and face aware had no trouble with it that I could see. What problem were you having?

Manual face selection isn't available at this time.

Thank you,
Hannah Nicollet

The problem was that it didn't recognize a face (I'm using: PShop CC 2017.1.1 Release 20170425.r.252 x64 updated this morning.

As you can see:

I can't find someone looking over the top of their glasses. I probably have one somewhere, but. . . What I can find that should be impossible is pretty impressive. 3/4 profiles, almost full, and no problem finding the face. Tilted down, no problem. Tilted down and sideways—works. Even a Marine, 3/4 profile, kevlar, sunglasses, only the mouth capable of being modified, not a complete jawline—no problem.  How did it even see that a round object on top of an opaque dark strip (sunglasses), the tip of a nose, tip of an ear, chin cut off by the line of an MRAP, and only the mouth distinctly human? But it did know that was a face.

All in all, it's pretty impressive. I'll still voice a concern I have, though. Artificial Intelligence isn't the holy grail anymore. It's here and now, not just the future. Pretty exciting, really. We see results of it more and more with Adobe features being able to "see" the image, know a lot about it, and act upon it. However, we humans still need a transition period while AI is growing up. It concerns me that Adobe is trying perhaps a little too hard to develop it's Sensei AI, and not paying enough attention to developing alongside that the tools we still need now to control the AI features when they fail us and we humans have to once again take over.

I don't want them to stop developing the AI. But having the aid of AI doesn't mean I don't want to be able to manually brush on my masks in S&M using D&B or Blend modes to clean up, while we wait for the QS tool and Refine Edge brushes to be more perfect. Or that we don't want to adjust Santa Clause's eyes with the Liquify face tools instead of the manual method, simply putting in the path points ourselves, when the AI doesn't recognize a full frontal face because of the heavy fake Santa Clause beard hiding mouth, jaw, and chin. —Funny it can handle only seeing a nose and mouth but not only seeing a nose and eyes.

Anyway, that's why we're still asking for human control while the AI grows up. More along the lines of if it doesn't know, let me, the human, intervene without having to go back to using last century's methods. I know that's asking a lot, but Adobe is spoiling us with getting oh so close, but not quite there yet. More time spent making hybrid features would help a lot. Heck, to please us, more money spent hiring more programmers would also help. LOL

Gordo,

Sorry - tunnel vision. I was looking at your version and mistook it for a win build. I tested face aware on your image on Win and Mac and both worked impressively well.

Can you share a screen shot of your system info from Photoshop? (Help > System Info). I'm wondering if you just need to log out of the Creative Cloud and log back in to get the new version.

Thanks,
Hannah

2018 was released today. You need to update to see the improved Face Aware Liquify. I'd advise installing without letting the CC APP uninstall 2017 in case you find there's something in 2018 that doesn't work right and you have to go back to 2017 to carry out that task.

Wow much improved, the face detection even works with a profile and hair covering half of the face! Well done.....

I updated this afternoon doing what PShop told me to do. Are you saying that there’s a second update released today?

It sure looks like you have 2017 installed with that report. If you had an update waiting,  the CC app may have updated 2017. It wouldn't necessarily have the 2018 notification. It can take up to 24 hours if you do nothing. Try quitting and relaunching the Creative Cloud app, and seeing if the CC App shows that you have an update/install for PS.

I updated my MAC OS to 10.13
I installed PShop 2018
It still does not detect the face (see screen grab) I don't understand why it works on your PShop but not mine. :-(

How about if you select the person icon right above the hand? Does it work for you then?

No difference other than a pop up notice appears (see screen grab)

Okay, so now I am going to suggest the standard: save any custom presets you've made and then delete your Preferences (Cmd-Opt-Shift-click to launch).  I downloaded your file and can confirm what Heather saw. 2018 does recognize the face, so since we're on the same platform, this shouldn't be a Windows vs Mac thing. Deleting Preferences is typically the first step. I've enlarged his eyes and made him smile as much as the app allows.

I'm sorry. I really don't know why it's turning out to be so complicated. Hopefully someone from Adobe will be working this weekend and see this and help you troubleshoot.

I’ve posted the image on a photography forum to see if anyone else has the same problem with this image. Only one response so far. A person running Win10 - and his PShop doesn’t detect a face in this photo either.

I installed the latest update for Photoshop CC 2019 yesterday, and now the face aware liquify tool doesn't recognize ANYTHING. Really getting tired of the updates making everything crash. Last update it was all liquify tools.
