Bridge: Need help with image sort

In Bridge when I try to batch rename it is set to manual sort.  I sort all my pieces and hit batch rename but it doesn't sort them anymore.  Nothing is in order the way I set it up in Bridge.  It worked in the past and since the latest update of PS CC it hasn't.  So I'm not sure if it is related to PS or not.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you could take a snapshot of what your manual sort was, and how it didn't hold when you chose batch rename? I'm trying to follow you here. Are you saying that when you want to add, say, a number prefix or suffix to keep the manual sort order in the filename itself, it's not numbering them correctly?

I'm on a Mac running High Sierra, and I'm not having a problem keeping my manual sort when using Batch Rename. If I move a file up in the order it was in, then choose batch rename and give it a number, it's in the order it should be, not in, say, alphabetical order.

So it's possible that you need to remove your preferences from the last version of Bridge and restore Bridge with new ones. Purging cache at the same time might prove beneficial as well. Bridge doesn't do well version to version without starting fresh (a PITA, I realize). Or it's possible I'm not following you at all, in which case, I think anyone trying to help would need to see what you're doing, and know what OS you're trying to do it with. Some bugs are OS specific.

Thanks for getting back to me hun.

Okay I am a little confused, what do you mean by "You've got multiple dates going on"?

As far as modifying my preset, not sure what that means either.  I didn't put a preset in bridge, are you talking about a preset bridge already has?

Where do I take a screenshot of the preset?  Sorry to sound so ignorant, all I really know about bridge is how to batch rename.

Thank you for the compliment on the alpha, and as far as dating my stuff.  Old habit I guess.  I save them that way and they are not created the date they are sorted.  I guess I really don't need to know when I made them.  LOL

Also I am running Windows 10, PS CC 2019 with the latest update 20.0.3

How do I remove preferences and add new ones?

Thanks so much for taking the time to try and help me.

Okay, I'll try again. IOW, I'm really not sure what you're doing that's failing. It all starts with naming if you want a sort that holds. The names must follow start to finish in some alphabetical way. In your case, they can, because your names are generic, not specific. If you had frames and scatters and masks and papers in their names, you can see how those will organize, by default alphabetically, only according to those interior names.

You put the date in front, numbers will sort first, then all the interior names, then sequence number. That's an alphabetical sort. If manual sort is lost, you can only get it back by sorting it manually again. So to me, not knowing exactly what you did, it looks like you lost your manual sort in that third folder, AND you didn't have filenames that would cause the manual sort to default to alphabetical and still be in place.

You can lose your manual sort anytime the .BridgeSort file in the folder becomes corrupt or you accidentally have it on another sort for another folder, forget, and then move a file in the folder before you spot it, setting up a new manual sort.

I made an example preset that's similar to yours. When I absolutely need a manual sort that will survive if it defaults to an alphabetical sort, I use a sequence prefix, not suffix, but that's because I'm not naming my files the way you do. It's quick and dirty.

So here is an example of using a prefix—I know this is the order I always want the files to be in—It can still fall apart when alphabetically, the numbers don't keep their order, but it's easy to fix then, without my first renaming the files the way you do. With your naming method for files, the second might hold up even better. Worth a try, and then see what happens when you switch to another kind of sort. Don't move your files, just switch sorts and come back to alphabetical and see if it still holds up.

I'm not guaranteeing, btw. I'm not a programmer, so I do this by trial and error. I typically will do one more digit than I need in the Sequence + Filename so I have a leading zero to help keep it properly sorted—when it's really important.

And here's what I think you might have done, but it won't hold if you don't carefully make sure that it will hold alphabetically:

Does this make better sense? The main takeaway is play with your files and see what batch rename works for your needs. I've saved several presets so I can change according to what I need.

Thanks, but I didn't change anything in Bridge.  I did it the same way I always do, just one day it didn't work.

I guess I'll try to make a preset and see if that works.  Thanks for all of your help.

It sounds like possibly something got farkled, not uncommon with Bridge settings. <sigh> I hope this helps you find a way to bulletproof yourself against a potential issue like this again. I know I've got some "storytelling" sequences where all I did was put a 0xx-prefix to the filename and they never have lost their order, whereas other times I've relied upon the Manual sort and lost it easily for whatever reason.

Your file naming convention in the ABC screenshot looks pretty ideal, so I think it might be fairly easy for you to make a preset that stands up to the test. If you can't, let us know. Someone here surely will be able to figure out what needs to be done.

Thank you hun for all of your help.  I looked yesterday to try and figure out how to make a preset in Bridge and couldn't figure it out.  Today I will research on google to see if I can find out how to fix it.  Fingers crossed!
