The face are detected on mobile but the names are not synced with the names from desktop.

Correct. Face information does not sync between mobile and the Lightroom Classic desktop application. Syncing only occurs between the Lightroom CC clients (Desktop, web and device)

And that is because...? Faces are in beta on mobile?

I don't mind waiting for this feature but to hear an Official Rep confirm the behaviour is correct is disheartening. I agree - tell us it's Beta, tell us it's coming and I'll patiently wait for the two platforms to converge in some way someday.  The unknown future scares me and reminds me of the pain of loosing all my work when switching from Aperture to Lightroom when it was killed off.

Like Hierarchical Keyword syncing (see other threads), I'm in disbelief that there is a second implementation of face recognition. Let's face it neither interface is effortless. I've put a lot of hours into tagging faces in classic. To see this "New Feature" show up on iOS with none of the previously recognized face data is really disappointing.

The two platform won’t converge, on the contrary:

Classic will remain the same with less and less upgrades. And no sync updates at all. Classic is going to die sooner or later because it does not fit CC’s business model.

CC will be improved little by little to get the most popular Classic function (maybe not all the “pro” features).

It is only my opinion, but they want to push towards CC because of the growing competition; with the raw files on their servers, it will be more difficult to switch to another software.
