Photoshop: My tools are failing, one by one...

I've been using photoshop for years. I'm pretty good with it! All of a sudden the tools aren't working - first it was the paintbrush (worked when I made a new layer then stopped after a while until I made yet another layer) - now crop tool, move tool etc won't work. Aaaargh!

What version of Photoshop? What OS/Version?

What do you mean by 'not working'? Are you clicking on the canvas and nothing is happening? Some other unexpected result? Or are you getting an error?

I choose the paintbrush/pencil - try painting with it - no visible mark - or sometimes a pale or grey mark, or sometimes it will show over some parts of the image and not others. I'll make a new layer and it'll draw on that for a while and then conk out again, so I merge the layers, make a new layer and so on.
I've sometimes selected the move tool and it just doesn't show up as a little cross on the file, I've had the polygonal lasso tool do the same - yet the lasso tool was fine
I've had the crop tool not work - had to close the file, re-open it and crop it.
Just now I drew something - gave the command z to get rid of the little bit I'd just drawn and the whole layer disappeared!
It seems to happen quite randomly.
Its Photoshop CS5 12.0 x 64. Its O/S X 10.6.8

Make sure Photoshop is Up-To-Date:

I followed the up-to-date link. After reims of impenetrable gobbledygook and much lengthy downloading of stuff I don't even recognise, apparently photoshop couldn't install because of mysterious "error".
