I ran into the same problem a few months ago -- text not appearing in the image and bizarre point sizes listed in the Options Bar.
I solved it by resetting the Text tool, rebuilding the Preferences and rebooting the computer. None of those methods initially fixed the problem, but out of frustration (and madness) I kept repeating those steps until it worked.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Tiny box and no text shows unless I put a ridiculously humongous text size...
Already reseted the tool and the preferences and nothing!
Everything was working normally yesterday...

You probably have the resolution set really low or really high (in the example below it's set really low [ 1 ] which would exhibit this behavior):

If you set the resolution to something reasonable like 72 or 240, this behavior should work more like you expect.
I think this is the problem that MaryT, BlameTheCat and Valerie Potter are seeing with type being really small and point sizes not making any sense.

But after some closing and opening and a few computer resets, it started working again!
I guess the mystery continues...

You probably should post a screen shot of your image size dialog on a document you can't change the resolution on.

The other thing I would try is culling your fonts using a binary search to see if it's a problematic font causing the issue.

I have elements 8 and I am having the problem with my text on pictures being very tiny, even on 72pt. Can someone offer help? I am totally new with this editing stuff! I reset the tools as suggested in earlier posts but it doesn't help.

On the bottom right-hand side of the screen, there should be the "Layers" section.
I found that the "background" layer kept getting selected, instead of the layer I was working on.
By selecting the layer I was working on, I was then able to add a text box on that layer and see the text come up.
I hope that helps.

This is 3200 point font in a 1 dpi image. There is a whole bunch of text between the "s" and "d" that is 6 point.

uncheck "Resample Image" and put a smaller value in the Resolution field. (72-300)
